I found it interesting that the survey gave these results

.net 63%
.info 18%
.org 15%
.biz 5%

Were .DE and .US offered as an option? I myself have regged both the info and us versions of several thousand names when the coms were gone over the last year, and left the nets.

Agree Doc, net is not good. I always take org and us vs the net.

In fact, IMO .org should rank #2 behind com with .us #3. I seriouslly doubt the validity of the results. I see no way .net could be more than 4 times more popular than .org. Years ago it was so but not lately. Just yesterday I looked at several names where the com and org were both taken but net was available.

Which is what I do.

It all depends on the name category ... If you go and reg a gambling related .org over a .net then you made a big mistake ... but a .org over a .net in a government or business organization can have its advantages. A .us would have its advantage under certain categories as well ... I dont think you can rank them just in general without being category specific.

However, the public as a whole will view .net as 2nd best.

Good question. People from 81 countries responded, so I didn't want to include country code domains like .us. I don't disagree with you guys - I avoid .nets as well (and people like Adam are .com snobs :)

Incidentally, if you only look at the responses from the 28 people that own > 1,000 domains, the stats are as follows:

.Net 75%
.Org 14%
.Biz 0%
.Info $11%

I wouldn't ignore .net. While I am not a big .net supporter, it is still a viable extension and most internet users are familiar with it.

I agree with what has been said JE you make a very good point, category specific. But you cannot overlook .net very popular in ASIAN countries.

I think .net is very popular internationally because it is pronounced the very same way in every language. I myself go for another .com or get the .us version.
