.com vs .net

Hi there,
I have seen a few good names lately but have been reluctant to register them because only the .net is available

How valuable is a .net?
How far back from the .com is it?

Is there any rules ascociated for .net. Can a .net be for commercial enterprises? Or is it considered second rate

Any help on this topic would be much appreciated.

.net is supposed to be for network infrastructure providers, but no restrictions are actually enforced these days.
