If YouTube is in fact pulling down Comedy Central clips, as reported by the New York Times, then it's not doing a terribly good job......

YouTube is going to be a real problem for Google. They are providing a forum for people to show copyrighted material...and they are collecting profit from it. It would be like owning a movie theater that shows pirated movies. You don't show them yourself but you allow others to come in and use your theater to show them. You just collect and keep the ticket revenue. What's the difference?

I think they may be hoping to use Youtube as their
'battleground' for redefining copyright law (and its
distribution) in relation to video content.

Yes, Youtube appears to be a very great liability but
no one credits Google with being stupid... This looks
to be a very high stakes game for Google and if they
are able to benefit from changes in copyright law then
it will likely also help their search business and future
aspirations...
