Ok, I want this to be a domainers confession thread. Post stupid shit that you've done as a domainer or whatever whether drunk, high, or some newly prescribed prescription drug.

My Confession #1:

A few years ago when I just got into the biz, I reg 100+ longhorn names (codename for windows xp I think) thinking Microsoft would come knocking at my door. I had no idea of copyright laws or what the **** a codename was. I was so pumped when I regged Longhorn4Sale2TheAmericanPeople.com Long way since then, but lesson learned.

Got to love the early days.

Post your confession. Dont be shy... I have more.:eek:k:

When I started few years ago, a domainer informed me that I could make more money if i direct traffic from him. I had no clue to the rules of sedo and fabulous and said okay to his strategy. it was a dn member too, one month later i was banned from sedo and fabulous for traffic violation... i learned the hardway... i wrote them a letter telling them i had no idea that directing traffic would ban me, their answer: READ THE RULES

If I knew better, I would have never paid the conman $100 US for traffic. He told me everyone does it, and i got banned.

I was such a newbie years ago I used to waste valuable time on the "other forums" and also park names at sedo...I have since learned my lessons and now I use parked.com and dnforum nearly exclusively! And my annual income reflects such! Like whoaaaa ;)

I was such a newbie - not all that long ago - that I was clicking on the links of my first few domains to see what the links brought viewers to. I figured that the parking services would identify it as my IP address and automatically block any revenue from the clicks, no questions asked.

Then if it was possible to be any dumber, I asked if this practice was okay on one of my very first DNF posts! Needless to say, I very quickly learned what click fraud was and how major an issue it is. Though, I never did get banned from my first parking account...hmmm.

i confess that...

i used to actually believe, what others said my names are worth!

i also used to believe that selling your generic names for 10 years revenue was a good deal.
this was until i noticed that names i owned in 2004 started making more in 2005 and now in 2007 they make much more than they did when i first got them.

Some years ago while under the influence of all the above, I began to register dnames:rolleyes:

But now that I have been clean for sometime and paying daily for these name renewals, I wonder if it was all worth it ( going clean )

It is my bad fate that I found many LLL.COM's available anywhere from 1997-1999 , I thought they were meaningless! and useless....

I left those never registered even one... instead I registered many stupid names.

At the time I was not internet literate, was just anxious about internet I just know that it is going to be big, but never had a clue of what to do to get rich on the web.

Learned it the hard way but it is worth it. Domaining that is.

Thanks for starting this thread, it is sweet and sour :)

Thank you for these posts. I'm a newbie myself and hopefully I learn from these experiences. The mistake that I made was I didn't know how auctions really worked and posted my domains on all of the auction forums and spent money to put the domains in easier spots to find. Somebody told me not to post all of my domains in the same place. What if you received a bid at sedo and tdnam at the same time? Then what? I pulled the domain from tdnam, which resulted in me wasting $20.

I see people do this all the time though. What's your thoughts on this???

The stupidest thing I've done in this business to date, was just yesterday when I incorrectly assumed Sedo actually knew what the f#ck they're doing. I submitted a group of domains for the GreatDomains auction, and their recommended sales prices are 95% lower than the already low prices they recommended for the same domains just two months ago.

Just wondering if I missed another dotcom bust this last month?

When I started reg'ing domains in 2000, I used two registrars.

At one, I was paying $30-$40 apiece to register .com's & .net's. (Fortunately, I only registered about 10 names there.)

At the other, it was only $9-$10, so I registered hundreds of completely worthless names (with years in them, such as BowlGames2001-dot-whatever). Took me years to dig out from under that $xxxx in losses. (D'oh!)

When I first started domaining, my first 16 registrations were a .net and .org for $29.50/each, then 14 .cc names at $100/each per year of registration. This was right after the Beauty.cc scam.

When I was first getting started, I turned down an $8k offer for a name I hand registered just a couple months before. I was hoping to get just a bit more out of the buyer after lengthy negotiations, but I ended up getting nothing and I'll probably let the name expire this year.
