For those who think that China is all about Paddy Fields, I think you should take a look at this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/4443404.stm

The brand new Tomson Riviera apartments in Shanghai's Lujiazui financial zone have just broken the record for Shanghai's most expensive apartments.

At $13.564 per square metre, they are trying to double the previous record held by the Richgate apartments located in the trendy downtown shopping area of Xintiandi.

But the managing director of Tomson Group and former Taiwanese movie star, Tong Hsu Feng, does not believe in discounting.

"Of course, as we all know, because of the recent macro control implemented by the government, the property market is not as good as before, but those on top of the income pyramid are not affected by the property market."

There are 220 river view apartments for sale ranging in size from 433 to 1200 square metres and costing between $5m and $25m.

Hell I can buy a building downtown on the river here and probably talk the city into letting me park my Yacht out front from the leftovers for that. My sisters best friend is from China. Her parents built her a house overlooking the lake with 4500 SF for 380k as a wedding present. The inlaws apartment in the house is bigger than her parents apartment in china which they paid the equivalent of 1.5 million US to live in. I guess thats why she prefers to live here.

Well, its all down to competition for Space. China has a huge population, but in terms of Geographical Area, it no worse off than Bangladesh or even Japan. The competition for Real Estate, however, is very real.

When you look at Domain Space, competition is bound to be even more acute. China has the world's largest population, single written Language, but only the same access to domain space as everyone else. It has launched second level ccTLD extensions for each Province, but then we could do that as we have many of the IDN dot coms. None of this will, however, reduce the competition for the Prime Real Estate, which is first level dot cn and dot com.
China has made a huge push to get the internet going and its efforts to launch IDN have been no less determined. Chinese IDNs will shortly be worth a fortune, even if nobody in the US is interested!

I was just chatting with a network colleague of mine based in Shanghai, it is unbelievable what is happening there. Any multinational business that does not have a plan for China, is crazy.

Yes, but try and name one that has a coherent strategy with Branding and Domain names. Even Google is having to buy domains which it overlooked to register!
