Direct navigation / Bookmark traffic - Differentiating the two?

As the title suggests, is there any way to identify these two different sources of traffic?

No, for both there is no referer.

Also:

There is also no referer when the page is linked from a frame.
There is also no referer when it's a bot.
When the visitor come from some mailer, there is also no referer.
And javascript trick exists to hide referers.

All this to say one cannot determine the search type-in volume exactly.

but Monte and crew will trot out numbers saying 85% of people use direct navigation which is completely silly. This includes bookmarks, people going to domains they know the url of etc. but they are trying to make it seem like it is random type in....

I prefer to not comment to this last post.
Otherwise I am going to complaint again about this BIG LIE of direct navigation popularity.
People will finish thinking I am a true pest.

Personally, I view Bookmark traffic just as valuable as type-in traffic.
