That's because more and more keywords, phrases and search terms are being registered as .coms, and almost anything can be found by searching the term as a .com. The resulting landing page provides a smaller and more-relevant and higher-quality set of listings, and may include a nice design with one or more sparkly images, making searching for something as a .com better than using the search engines. But that's just my perception, distorted or warped as it may be, with my own desire to control as much traffic as possible, with my own domains.
