Discuss Future Value of .Me Compared To Past Launches Of Premium Extensions!

Hi,

I know there's already a thread with opinions on the .Me domain, but I'm wondering about the future value of .ME compared to how it's been marketed in comparision with other extensions launch. I wasn't paying any attention to when for example .info , .mobi and let's say .name where introduced and how they were marketed. So therefore I've started this thread, so that everyone with that knowledge could enlighten me (.me), discuss and compare the launch of .Me to for example the launch of .info and based upon our discussions we could make a more qualified guess on how the value of .Me would be reflected in the future.

So what do you guys say, below are my questions which I'm looking forward to discussing. I've used .info as the successful example and .Name as the less successful example.

Points for discussions:

* Is the launch similar to the .info launch in regards to marketing from the registrars?

* Sedo mentions that more than 70 registrars from all over the world is offering the .ME , is this similar to when .info was launched or more like .name?

* What's really the difference between the .Me and the .Name , isn't both just meant to be about you (me) and personal sites?

* Was there the same, similar or greater interest in the landrush auctions for .info as there is now in the .Me auctions?

* I've seen a lot of marketing from registrars concerning the .Me both prior and now after the launch, as a little detail it did also swiftly receive it's own category here at dnforum. Is all this similar to the launch of .info?

* What's the differences and similarities between the launch of .info, .name , .mobi and .ME ?

* Do you think the .ME would receive a boost in the media soon by being used at a website by a major company (or have it already happened) ?

* After a while, do you think .ME would be featured next to .com , co.uk , eu , .info , .mobi , .net , .org at Sedos common extensions and common extensions which is being displayed when registering a domain at a registrar?

Well that's just some starting points to get the discussions going and hopefully our discussions will make us a little more educated on the future value of .ME , even though we never can know for sure until in about 1-3 years .

The registrar marketing for .me was brilliant..."Personalize your own website." Like FirstName, LastName, First/LastName .com/net/.org or any of the other extensions isn't personal enough. Remember, .me is the ccTLD for Montengro. I bet more domainers know about .me then where Montengro is actually located.

The only 2 things that seperate .me and .name is that .me is a ccTLD while .name is a gtld. .Name has not gained 1% of mainstream notoriety and .me will follow the same path.

There is a totally different angle on this besides the pronoun - the use of .me as an abbreviation for Maine. I am trying to work that as far as marketing the domain to Mainers and buying up town and city names, as well as activities like seakayak.me, etc.

It is really hard to say where it will go. I think that things will pick up for .me when (if) some major google, facebook, car company or something starts marketing a .me so people can hear it even exists.

I would concur with this - .me isn't going anywhere.

I tried to do the same thing, tried about 30 different locations in Maine, all were taken.

Here is what i think...

For resellers it's probably not a great idea to own a lot in your portfolio. More than 1% is too much in my opinion.

In general though...i think .me sounds great for end users. Long term though, will it have strength? Probably not...since you need people in the country to be buying .me and it has to be promoted. It has to be used...if it's not ..it can't really be successful.

I do believe that when ccTLD extensions are released to the public right from the beginning they kind of diminish some value from them. I would prefer all ccTLD's to be restricted within the country for a couple of years before they are ever released to the public. In any case, i think you will see more interest in .me than some other ccTLD's and this is mostly just because of the end user potential in promoting it.

i think .me will grow over time , i like the personally 'feel' to it , i think .me and .tv are the ones for the future

Like a lot of new extentions, they make some great sales early on and over time fizzle out. Maybe its just me but i really dislike country code tld's used for vanity purposes.
