I heard a rumour that .biz domains don't rank as well as .com's or .net's for instance.
Has anyone tested this and found it to be true?

I wouldn't blame the .biz TLD, rather blame the individual sites. I was curious and did a couple of queries on Google.com
  • ".biz" with quotes compare to ".com" and ".net"
  • site:.biz
  • keyword site:.biz
So maybe you can enter a keyword in your market with site:.biz to see if there are any .biz sites live to reference. After that, use some SEO tools to see if the site owners are even trying to rank well.

Of course everyone loves .com and end users don't understand what the heck ICANN is doing with new TLD launches.

Just some quick thoughts.

I've noticed that it's far more about SEO than the TLD / ccTLD.

I only have one .biz domain (not developed) but I've had some .org, .net, and .us domains outrank the same keyword.com domains with SEO.

As others have said, I don't think that that search engines automatically rank it lower.

Although some visitors might.

i think search engines do rank and give certain weightage to exts.

said that, it may be debated on certain sites other tlds coming higher then .com .

this is due to the fact of other algorithm parameters that overshadows the ext. weightage .

and mind it, this era is about search engines and social networking, so search engine are getting smarter and better and keeps them updated on the market behavior / trend

I have some very good results with .biz extension in moderate competition niches. I really don't think there is any bias from Google.
