This just occurred to me while I was thinking up some copy to advertise a domain name for sale. Do end-users use the term "domain name?" Do they understand what it means? And I'm not talking about relatively sophisticated tech end-users. I'm thinking ma and pa business owner end-users.

Pondering this today, I asked myself what other terms of referring to domain names might be more appropriate - web address, Internet address, URL, web site address.

Anybody have any real-world experience of talking to end-users about domain names or know of common terms used in the mainstream press?

From my "real world" experience, most of those "ma and pop'ish" type individuals use the word "website" and don't even know or care to know that a domain name and a website are two different things. They just associate both as being as being the same. Like, you can't have one without the other.

Now, For those that think they do understand and know anything and everything about the internet and websites. These people would be the "high-tech friend" or "computer whiz buddy" of those ma and pop'ish people. These guys or girls refer to a domain as a "website address".

Not sure if this helps but here you go.

Thanks!

I have a potential buyer (the CEO of a well established B2B database company) sent me an email inquiring if the "url" is for sale. Then in the 2nd email with counter offer he referred "web address". :)
