I feel like often it's sort of like gambling...with much better odds of you winning if you know the game. The risk and the thrill are always there...

Ever have those days when you're bidding on a name, or won a name, and you know it's going to be a huge flip? I'm talking at least 1000%? Don't you love that feeling...I figured it sort of keeps my self-esteem up (and it's really up :D). Makes you feel like you're sort of doing something right.

Just a thought :p

As with the stock market, one should not let emotions take over what should be a programmed, calculated process.

While domain valuation is subjective, when involved in an auction one should have a realistic idea of how much a name could eventually be sold, consider sales commissions and holding costs and the risk that the domain may never sell or generate enough PPC income to justify the purchase. High-traffic domains aren't likely to become available and if they are the domain whizzes can better assess how much they are really worth than those newer to the game.

A couple of weeks ago someone mentioned on one of the boards that mortgagelenders.net was available on Snapnames. I figured just to see the auction process I would submit a bid. The auction winner paid more than $5200. This is a frequent term but a two-word .NET domain. So I ask did they really win? How much do they think they can realistically sell it for a few years from now? Will a two-word .NET domain generate hundreds of dollars a year in PPC income? I'll leave open the possibility the winner already had a corporate buyer lined up but that leaves the little guys unable to outbid such buyers.

It they are a mortgage lender the value added to their business is countless.
if they re-sell they may not make much % wise.

Yes, domaining makes me feel like a warrior, it's me against them man. When I look back at my YTD income last year and made as much money as most doctors I feel pretty damn good about myself. :eek:k:

:spy: :pound: :smokin: :pop2: :shy:

Domaining makes me hang on till I feel like I have no more energy to stare at the screen! and fingers becoming weak, resulting in late nights. it almost became a standard that I sleep next day morning everyday.

It is indeed a kick of its own kind which I love to experience. Oh yeah think about multi tasking what a mess :D

If you put it into context, the real fun is where you pick up a domain that in a single year earns you twice the reg fee. As a domainer, it may not seem that big of a deal. But it beats the stock market (unless you're a lucky day trader) and the banks' paltry interest rates on deposits. Think about that when you're feeling down about your parking income :D

successful domaining gives you freedom

as you could live almost anywhere on the planet and still get your money

though sometimes I do feel a rush
when the bids gets tight and the seconds are ticking

palms get sweaty...my fingers start slipping off the keys

never knew those typing classes would come in handy :)

Nice comments you guys...Ever have those moments when you feel like a total nerd?
You're out somewhere, thinking how you snapped up a winner...smiling...and someone asks you why you're smiling...

-"Well..I picked up this sick domain name today..."
:D

Does domaining give you a rush? Boost your self esteem?

~ This is a great thread topic ...thanks for starting it RichInCollege. I do find a boost in self-esteem with when I find success with my domains. I felt the rush was slowly fading as domains became harder and harder to acquire at a price I could afford, but still catch some nice names daily. Just not near the quality as I did when I started 3 years ago. It takes a special type of person to stick with this industry...an intuitive, entrepreneurial thinker makes for a long-term domainer ...it varies, but this is what I have found through the years. I have moved from only investing in domains to web development, which has started to build that rush I used to feel when I scored a name I loved. It's a passion. Without the passion, domaining would not be no.1 on my list...but mine is changing from domaining to develoment quickly, as opportunites open up. Intuition has been the key for my finding the rush I have found with this exciting experience. :)
Cheers.

I'm pretty new to the game and still waiting for a big one....the search for that high is what keeps me going, that and the fact I like to learn new things and I am learning new things every single day through my interest in this.

Aside from the domaining itself, getting involved has opened my eyes to a lot of other stuff that I can use to help improve my existing websites. I have been involved in websites now for the best part of 15 years, and I have probably learned more about the internet in the last 6 to 12 months through my interest in this than I have in any other period before that.

#1 Google Rankings, Increased site visitors, Increased PPC revenue....these are all great offshoots from this and even if I never make that big scoop on a domain then it will have more than paid for itself in other ways.

when you reg or buy a good name it's like a new relationship, you think of all the possibilities for that name, how it could make a great site, how glad you were the first one to get it.

Then after the rush you move onto finding the next name.

But there is a lot of info out there these days about what a good domain is, overture scores, domain sales reports, so it's not totally emotional - there is some calculation to it now.
