Someone whose domains I manage got a renewal letter form their hosting company and Iwas a little surprised to see what they're being charged for. The site isn't too much, not traffic heavy at all (maybe 20-50 visitors a day if they're lucky?).

This is the rundown of the charges:

$240 a year for hosting with database ($170 w/o the database).

OK, this isn't bad. $20 a month (or $15ish) isn't that bad for end user non-multi site hosting. they could do a lot better but this company also designed their site for them.

$300 a year for "webmaster service"

Their site doesn't go into what this includes - I hope it means reasonable updates (not unlimited but at least maybe one to two a month?

$240 for 1 year of their lower end SEO.

This one made me laugh. It includes:
Guaranteed Website Indexing in Major Search Engine
Keyword/Key phrases Suggestion
Meta Tag Generation
Content Uploading
HTML Site Map For Major Search Engines
Link Analysis
Support on Chat, In Person, Phone, and Email

Is it just me or is all this a one shot deal? I also love their wording - they don't tell you WHERE in the search engine you'll be, just indexed (which with backlinks will get done on it's own anyway).

I always loved people who charge for meta tags (I also love the ones who charge PER tag). While the analysis of the site and keyword search volume helps with getting the right tags, I think this is only done once. A site like this wouldn't benefit from constant tweaking of the meta tags.

Link Analysis? What is that supposed to be? They check your links going out (wouldn't make sense for SEO) or incoming ones?

That's $880 a year for the hosting.

I'm debating if I should tell them to see if my host can handle the files and database and I'll host them for $100 a year - $150 for both sites (second one should also be coming up for renewal in a few months). ;)
