Does tnansferring a domain name reset it's creation date?

When I WHOIS some domains that I just purchased and has transfered from one registrar to the one I use I noticed that the creation date was listed as the date of the transfer.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I used to check creation date to see how old domains were and used it as part of my appraisal system. Now it looks like I will have to reconsider...
