Hi

I own a generic 2-word .com that would sell here at around $8,000, and obviously sell to an end-user much higher.

I am thinking about leasing it out but am wondering:
  1. Is it common to lease domains?
  2. For how much should i expect to lease it out per month/year? Is it worth the trouble?
  3. How can I keep the website owner happy whilst not losing the domain (for instance, but changing the WHOIS to their contact information)?

Thanks

Zach

Would love to lease/rent some of my names but have yet to. Do a search for leasing/renting here, there have been a few threads about it in the past.

Zach,

We don't do domain leasing but from a whois perspective, we change the domain registration to DNCredit.com and our clients advise us of their DNS settings. That way, they get the traffic but we retain ownership of the domain until repayment of the loan.

have you received an offer to purchase @ $8K or higher?

are we talking about an "open end lease" or a "lease to own"

i've "leased to own" domains and you probably wouldn't know if it's common or not, because most leases aren't advertised or are rarely mentioned.

the monthly or yearly amount is derived by dividing the "sale price" by the length of the lease.

eg: 5 yr lease is 60 months/ $8,000 = $133.33 per month for 5 yrs.

you can add in a 5% increase for each year as interest to offset inflation or valuation fluctuations

you maintain ownership and possession of the domain, until it is paid in full.

you just set the DNS to the nameservers they will use for the site.

you also need to know their usage for the domain, as you don't want it used for something that will hurt it's value during the term of the lease

but all that should be included in the agreement.

lmk if you need some pointers
