Does anyone know which registrars charge more to redeem your domain in this period and which ones don't?
Instead of redeeming a domain if its is in the RGP period its a whole lot cheaper just to xfer the domain. Non-payment during the RGP period is not a legitimate reason to deny a xfer, therefore just request the domain be unlocked and the auth code and xfer to a new registrar for $8.
You are speaking to the registry redemption period, in which you are correct and you do need to redeem thru your current registrar.
Redemption Period Status. When a Domain Name is deleted outside of the Add Grace Period or within the Registrar Transfer, AutoRenew, or Explicit Renew grace periods, it is placed on Redemption Period status for 30 days. The Redemption Period works as follows:
If the domain is in the Renewal Grace Period (RGP) then the domain can be renewed by the registrar for no additional fee, hence why the domain can be xfered to another registrar without a denial from the losing registrar.
Hope that clarifies it for you Cartoonz
