The answer is obvious - it is easier than using phone - name.class.country.reg

e.g. apple.tobacco.us.reg & apple.computer.us.reg

This was ratified by honest lawyers as the solution to consumer confusion for registered trademarks.

It acts as certificate of authentication and directory system.

Vint has spoke on the subject of search engines - this is cut from my responce on ICANN forum:

Article:
"I'm concerned that we don't get carried away with [establishing] new top-level domains," Cerf says. "It's a mistake to suppose that that's the way to partition the various constituencies of the internet."

Competent searching and indexing tools are a better way of finding an entity in an appropriate area than simply trusting that information service providers will be in the .info domain, he says.

"There are many parties offering similar services with widely differing domain names; our job is just to make sure that it all operates efficiently," he says.

This complete and utter rubbish from a bloke that was one of the fathers of the Internet - you would think he knows better.
article ends.

Tell us all Vint, is "Competent searching and indexing tools" (which may return hundreds/thousands of hits) OR a structured directory system better for finding the business you are looking for?
