Ok,

I'm kind of a domain noob without being a noob. I own tons of domains. So many that I know there are at least 20 or more that I have no idea I own.

If a domain name is 10+ years old..why is that important? For example...I bought a domain say 12 years ago, but NEVER put it online or even activated it..parked it in anyway..so no chance for SEO ....no links..no traffic...I hear people say it doesn't matter ...because the domain is old is a huge plus..I'd like to know why?

ok..now selling domains..in theory..a name like icasino or ipoker dot whatever is valuable or not? I see a few available, but the fact that they havent been taken tells me that the demand is not there...but then I see like sedo with these auctions of pretty damn new domains..some of which have horrible names, but still sell!..What gives?

Some SEO pro says SE favors older domains.

Generally if you've done nothing with it you'll join the queue. I turned down a 1985 domain for < $1000 a while back which didn't have any continuity of registration. Worthless IMHO unless it's a great generic or has traffic. I'd say 12 years of continuous registration is worth something more than spare change.

People think old domains may worth more because you can buy/register good names 10+ years ago.

It also depends on the name. There are names that not even worth register fees regardless of hold old they are. Ex: hklasdubefvsam.com

I agree with John. It's not like wine although if it does have lots of backlinks then hey go for it.

What do you mean by continuity of registration? Multiple owners just switching hands?

Like I got waygaydotcom which is 10ish years old...I never put it online until sept..and virtualpagedotcom which has been online since inception, but I use that for customer internet hosting business thingy.

Then there are newer domains that can command quite a bit and be worse ..at least I think ..in actual naming..like toonlifedotcom (not mine, but sold for a couple grand)..I couldn't find a better example, but I know there are far worse names going for $xxxx and I can't figure out why..probably because of traffic..that is the only thing I can think of.

And I am assuming .com/net/org supercede other TLD's if they are same age? I'll give you a good example..I got adilfhitlerdotat, but com would be worth more even if the "name" of person in the domain in question is actually from the AT origin country, so in effect it should be related more to the country of origin and not the .com..or am I just confusing everything.

Let's say you have anyolddotcom and reg'd in 1996
4 years later it expires and I buy it
5 years later I let it expire and it ends up back ordered somewhere
It's still got history from 1996 but whois may show 2005
The only thing that matters is the whois date
and just for the record we are always buying old names regardless of the name
our oldest to date is Jan 1993

If the domain isn't indexed in google, domain age becomes irrelevant you are basically starting from scratch.

I think you just nailed it on the head. And like I was telling everyone that it's not hard to be indexed or ranked high, you just need to know how. I've done it many times. I mean look at my onceyoustart site. It's not even complete and yet it sits at #2 out of 12 million and 803k, so it's not hard at all. Of course more competition means more work.
