The registry only allows expirations dates to be a maximum of 10 years from the current date. In theory you could do a 10 years renewal on the day the domain expires but otherwise the maximum is 9 years for a domain expiring during the next year.

If a domain expires in the next 365 days from today you can renew 9 years.

Today is March 11th so if a domain expires on March 1st 2006 you can add 7 years but if it expires on March 21st 2006 you can only add 6 years.

I had a customer request for 20 years on a new domain of his. He paid for ten years - with an auto-renew account with over $100.

I really recomended he not do that, but he refused and I do not mind the money :)
