I started domaining around over one and half to two years ago but I bought my first domain around 2 years ago.

My first domain was theGoodFriday.co.uk and I decided to dropped it.

It was awesome (not in good way).

Just a rubbish domain name I chose.

I learnt from my mistakes.

Do you, guys also start with such mistakes?

Yes, the problem is that it took me a couple of hundred domains (hand-reg) to realize my mistakes. Those are not that bad as my first one but still not good enough.

It's not the mistakes you make, it's whether or not you learn from them. When I first started I bought named that I thought were good. I parked them and tried to sell them and had no bites.

I'd say close to 95% of the domains that I hand registered the first 9 months of domaining for me I let drop (the other 5% were planned and developed). Well, I tried to drop them but that is a different story.

What I should have done is bought 2-3 revenue domains as opposed to 100+ hand registrations for the same amount of money. But now with hand registering, I am extremely selective (unless it is a new technology or I am going to develop it, most likely I won't register it).

My largest mistake was not finding this forum earlier. :)

When I started registering domains I also chose some worthless domains at first, simply because all the good ones were taken. However, I quickly found out what domains were worth registering and sold many of my first domains for a profit.

I also tend to be very picky about domains I register now, and noticed even less domains available to register.

I hope not. :)

Agreed... but would you rather have lost a few thousand at the school of hard knocks or spent it trying to flip houses and been caught in a diminishing real estate market? Cheap lessons dude :) . Hell, I'm still paying for my 1st wife. Now *that* was an expensive lesson! :upset:

I know I'm still at the mistake stage but, unfortunately, I don't know exactly which names are my mistakes, so can't learn by them yet.

I'm on some of those email lists where you get sent domains for sale but, to tell you the truth, most of them don't seem that great to me. But maybe they're terrific. Is this something you have to have a nose for to start with, or does it develop? Even some of the names posted for sale on Sedo or here, I can't see the money in, although I can understand why others get 'reg fee' when posted under Appraisals.

The thing about domains is that, often, one person's dropped 'rubbish' is another person's gold...with real value.

I'm often surprised.

Spot on. It often takes time to sell domains at reseller prices. If you don't have cashflow from either a web-site, parking or something, you won't feel inclined to renew your domains and you'll drop ones that could be sold in future for a profit. You need cashflow. If a domain makes enough money from parking or something to cover its reg fees, it's a no brainer to keep renewing it until someone gives a good offer for it.

Getting married more than once is a triumph of hope over experience
( Dr Johnson made this famous eighteenth-century remark )

Wanting to register names that you have previously dropped is a triumph of experience over stupidity
( I made that remark in the 21st century )

It is very normal to go backwards before moving forward. I hand registered a train-load of .asia domains, as well as no-value higher extension domains before learning that the solid and liquid investments are mainly .com and .net.

The keys to profits include snapping up brandable domains and having that buyer in mind when comtemplating "should I buy this one". It is always profitable to do your homework, research aftermarket domain sales portals etc.

I have little experience in domaining, only started seriously about 4 months ago. But my latest string of sales has been an encouragment to many fellow domainers and contacts - and myself :)

Ares.net $21,500 (cost me $6,900)
GoFlights.com $10,000 (cost me $900)
Amatrice.com $9,000 (cost me $3,800)
iPHOTOS.net $7,000 (cost me $60)
JumpGames.com $1,700
Tequilas.net $1,500 (cost me $59)
CardsToday.com $1,500 (cost me $59)

PM for details / tips.

So If I can land these types of sales after just 2-3 months of domaining, anyone can. The key for me was reading for hours, absorbing and learning. Knowledge is very valuable....

Absolutely. My first domain was a disaster! I don't even want to post it because it's so embarrassing... :)

But once you've read enough and learned from doing things better the second time around, it can only go up. Just don't waste too much money in the learning process. Limit your monthly budget to an amount you can easily afford to loose. When you start making profits on a regular basis you will automatically invest more money and get a feeling for it.

Good luck to everyone!

Very well done
You might want to take your sold names out of your auto sig
Changing the whois is something I always like to do before announcing completed sales. Thats just the way I do things.
