What is the name worth? (what would you actually pay?)

Also which board do you like?
http://www.dotforum.com - uses phpbb
http://www.dotforum.com/forum - uses Invision Board

Idea is to create a forum that includes topics like domain names, web design, web hosting and marketing

After installing both forum software, we tend to prefer Invision Board. It has a better admin interface. Also we seem to have a bug in the search feature of the phpbb board.

Buy vBulletin. I personally prefer it. The more I see of these other boards, the less I feel they offer than vb, other than "hey, I'm free and kinda like VB!"

Check the "Options" at the top left, or scroll to the bottom, and view the templating structure. v3 should be arriving soon.

At any rate, the name dotForum.com is nice. It would be a nice twist to have the domain registered in all major TLD extensions. NameForums.com is also a nice name, but I'm not sure how busy that forum is... the "name" is only part of the equation.

If I wanted to start a forum like this one, I would personally pay up to $100-$125 for that name, along with its dotForum(s).com counterpart.

The problem with forums is that one needs to BUILD the community actively. Posting alluding to it in another forum, never usually leads to anyone really wanting to come over and stick around, --or get a buzz created. So, starting any forum is basically adopting a challenge... one that clearly may not pay-off in the long run.

Critical Mass is extremely important and not simple to achieve. I've run a messageboard for years, and it's never achieved what I would term "critical mass". DNF has however. It can however be lost, but not easily.

Best way however to gain visitors is providing an "out" (that other members support) when another forum shuts down. But, it really does NEED to be dead, or about to die, permanently and for a longtime (like Afternic's).

Took a look at that demo. Looks nice overall. Having all of the vBulletin Options on the same page is a bit overwhelming though.

Possibly... but many webpages show all their information on one page and use anchor links located at the TOP to HOP to just the right set of information. It's also nice to be able to use it as a master control section I feel. I'm sure you could easily hack it up if you really wanted though. Vbulletin.org is a nice central place to search for extensions as well.

Sorry to be off topic but have you come across a php/mysql classifieds solution that you would consider similar in quality to that of vB?

Thanks

Do you mean to have a classified scripts? phpbazar is a nice script in my opinion. It costs $99.95 now.
