The next time someone accuses me of cybersquatting for parking a generic domain, I'll point them to this video so they can learn the difference.

Yep, good stuff, John!

I never heard of those DomainsIntoDollars.com guys, so I went to check out their website. It has a nasty recurring popup, which drove me away before I could learn anything about them. (Not an encouraging sign ....)

Informative interview....Thanks for sharing.

Phil Craig was extremely nervous though, camera shy perhaps :shy:

I've met Phil, he is soft spoken - probably not nervous.

Very good overall.

One small complaint ... John characterized domainers who register typos as "cybersquatters" instead of, what many feel is the correct term, "typosquatters".

Cybersquatter: registrant who registers a domain, but never pays for it - this was common back in the NSI days when registrants were invoiced for registrations.

Typosquatter: registrant who registers a domain similar to that of another, such as the name of a website, brand, actor, etc.

Typosquatting is a form of Cybersquatting.

Good point. Hadn't thought of it that way.

With that said, I still feel, "typosquatting" would have been the more preferrible term to use in that interview.

Phil Craig was extremely nervous though, camera shy perhaps

We had a tough time finding a quiet place to sit down and talk. They were setting up for the auction, and first there was some kind of banging noise, and then they turned out the lights. It was pretty funny.

One has to go waaaay back to remember the original context in which "cybersquatter" was used. These days, I use the word to refer to abusive registrations relative to a trade or service mark, of which "typosquatter" is a species. But, yes, it is a word which means many things to many people.

Domainus Squattus is the genus, with Domainus Cyberius Squattus as the sub-species. Domainus Typo Squattus is an aggressive mutation, that some say was fathered by Johannes Zuccarinius in the early 90's.
