When it comes to drop catchers, you have to choice in where the name was registered.

You've heard the stories about buggy interfaces.

You've heard the stories about no-English interfaces, and only CHinese or Japanese tech support.

You've even hear of registrars with no web site at all, just a 'coming soon' page.

Ladies and Gentlement, Pool has taken me one step further.

Today, a domain mine was placed at a company that not only has no web site, BUT DIED 9 MONTHS AGO!

Behold....

Hm.

http://www.webhosting.info/registrars/reports/total_domains/REBEL.COM

Hopefully the suggestion to measure access to the pool against total successful registrations should be taken seriously. I can only think that would improve this continuing travesty of a trend. IMO, registrars shouldn't exist solely to back-order names (while providing little to no service to the customers that get stuck with them). Ridiculous.

Yes, it's a sad scenario: on the one hand, we have a huge white elephant; on the other side, we have a bunch of hungry beasts, willing to do whatever they can, drill any legal loophole in order to fulfill their unsatisfiable GREED. Hmm ...

Fingers crossed in this still so very wild west. You'd THINK this could be regulated a little better. People using credentials to increase odds at successful backorders, and then having to deal with what that method entails. I'm still fairly impressed with eNom's architecture that seems to be able to completely unify the domain holdings of multiple registrars under one interface (eg. names held demonstrably at Sipence are still accessible through eNom's interface). Meanwhile other registrars do that "drop when no one's watching" thing, and hope they can "re-register" it quickly. Anyway. May just be my paranoia talking, but this stuff looks very shakey, and next to no one is working hard to keep things clear.
