I am a little new to the game, but I have been paying fairly close attention to when the whois database is updated. I don't know if it the same across the board but it appears to be updated at the same time each day for .com and .net's, right at 8am EST. The org's seem to do what they want but the database seems to be updated simultaneously.

My question is, if the drop occurs between 1400 and 1500 how can I get the information about which domains expired without an instant snap (for lack of a better word) before 8am? This seems to be a 17-hour period that could be very informative if I had the ability to check availabilities. I have been running scripts in my cron periodically (several times an hour) to check the names that are dropping today, but I can't get any info until 8am each day.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also if there is a registrar that will allow you to register these domains before the whois database is updated I would like to know that as well, then I guess I could just shoot in the dark and hope for the best.

Thanks,

You generally have to wait for the WHOIS to update to find out which registrar and person got a name.

However, if you are feeling ambitious, there is one way around it:

Most registrars keep real-time whois data (not all do. Network Solutions and Bulkregister are two who do not). If you query each regsitrar, the ones who do not have it will show the old whois data. The one registrar who did get the name will show the updated WHOIS information (unless of course it is one of those regsitrar who do not have real-time whois data).

Hope this helps.

That makes sense, but I am not looking for the names that got snatched, I am hoping to get access to which names expire without a back order of some sort on them.

You just have to wonder why the whois database isn't updated in real time. It's not like they don't know which ones are expiring.

If you have an Enom account then log into that just after drop time and see if it will allow you to register the domain. If it has dropped and someone else has snatched it, it will show as unavailable. If it has dropped and no one has taken it, it will show as available to register. There are plenty of people in here that will set you up with a $8.95 Enom accont if you have not got one.

That sounds reasonable, can you do bulk registrations there? I am sure I am not the first one that has thought of this, but can you dump a list of names into the bulk registration form and see what comes out of it?
