It says on their page that they have "teamed up" with snapnames.

Does this mean that they are running the same system, or something else?

I think that means somthing like, if someone backorders domain in dropwizard then usually it also has snapback on, so I think that dropwizard has some kind Snapnames API and they check if someone removes the snap from that domain, they place a snap on that name, so if snapnames catches the domain for dropwizard then You pay $120 to dropwizard, even they got it with snapnames for max $69.
But I can also be wrong

So does dropwizard still chase the name using it's own connections in addition to snap? I guess if they take out snaps on names they can devote more of their own resources to grabbing other names and tying up the snap spot to block others from using it. Not bad at all. Gordon deserves to have some more registrars to come on board with him.

To answer everyones question:D

Blame Kim, he and kjel got to talking and came up with the idea.

We now monitor the snaps that are dropped. If it is in our db (currently only in pending delete) we'll pick it up.

It's a good service in that:

It's our capital tied up not yours
We get access to all of snaps registrars and our own for the domain
I doubt if many of you could monitor their DB 24 hours a day

On the negative side they have some registrars that won't transfer names without notarized letters and a $35 fee. A problem we haven't been able to solve. We've been setting the nameservers up for the clients and will transfer at our expense at the end of 60 days to a more "intelligent" registrar.

But please note it only accounts for maybe a domain or two a day. It isn't a major part of our catches.

I think Gordon said it all! :) Don't hesitate to ask me or Gordon if you have any other questions regarding Drop Wizard.

As a sidenote, we are now catching .ca and .co.uk names as well. More info can be found on our FAQ page.
