Okay I seriously should get the dumbest domainer award of the century. I wasn't going to share this but I have gotten over the initial embarrassment. Now it's basically just stupidity that I feel.

I decided that I was going to be active and try to find an enduser for a lll.net domain that I sold awhile back.

Anyways I looked around for awhile and found that The NewYorker owned most of the names similar to what I had.

I spent 4 hours on the phone trying to find someone who might be interested in purchasing it for them. I finally get ahold of the person that controls most of their domains and he seemed very interested. He said he would talk to his client and email me in a couple of days if they were interested.

Not even an hour later they had not only emailed me back but put in an offer.

Now I had planned on selling this name for maybe $700 - $800, and I get an offer for $2000. I decided to give it a day to answer so I didn't sound so eager (which of course I was). I figured they really wanted the domain so I had a bit of leverage for asking for a higher price so I responded saying that things were negotiable but I was looking for mid to higher xxxx for it.

They countered with $4500 which was fine with me. I email them back to say I accept and he wanted me to look over an agreement the next day.

Guess what? I did not own the domain that I was trying to sell. I had overlooked one of the letters in my own domain,

I was trying to sell XNX when the domain was actually XMX. (not the real doamins just using it for example)

I had to email this guy back and tell him not to make payment that I had sent the wrong domain.

Can you imagine the embarrassment? It's horrible!

Thought someone got a good laugh out of this.

Should have gone forward with the deal, and knocked off $20 bucks...:pound:

seriously thats too bad, you should have contacted the owner and asked them if they wanted you to broker a sale for them. :)

contact the real owner, tell him that you know a company that is ready to pay $4500 for the name and tell him to let you broker the domain for 30% of the profit. His profit would be $3k and he will 100% be ok with that. And you will make 2x of what you initially wanted to sell the name for, without even selling the name:)

These things seem to happen more when you're holding your eyes open with toothpicks (and I should know...).

Thanks for sharing.

I've dropped a 2 word domain realizing it was spelled wrong. Months later I see a great domain on the list and buy it -- then realize I just re-bought the domain I dropped... and it's STILL not the correct spelling.

Several years ago I used to bid on domains at auction at Namewinner.com. Some poor guy from Hong Kong kept bidding on single word English domains that were single word typos. I felt bad for the guy figuring he doesn't know English well, and didn't know he was wasting money on mistakes. His name was Yun Ye. He sold his "mistakes" a couple of years later for $163 million, and that was just half of his portfolio.

Back in the early 90's I ran a matchmaking BBS, and there had been a big story about me in the LA Times. I got a call from a guy trying to start a website, and wanted me to advertise his site on mine for FREE. I said "no thanks" and pretty much just hung up on the freeloader. The site he was starting was Match.com. He also had another site, Sex.com.

I was negotiating for a week about a domain with an end-user, just to find out that I've let it drop a year before, and a Pakistani is the new owner.

actually, theres loads of stories like that

or the guy who paid most ever for a .us domain, 35k or whatever it was for videos, except he was european and had took off him, and the guy before him had the same fate :worried:

drophouses cashing in both times

and the story goes on.............
