Are there still members with .edu (pre-2001 restriction) registrations. If so what do these domains go for and can they be transferred?

3. When I change or release a name, can I transfer the old name to another institution?

No. You do not "own" the name and, therefore, may not give, sell, or in any other way transfer it to another institution. When you release a name, it becomes available for all institutions to select on a first-come-first-served basis.
11. How long can I retain registration of a .edu name under the “grandfather” provisions of the Cooperative Agreement?
Instututions and organizations with .edu domains prior to October 2001 will be allowed to retain those domains so long as they maintain proper administrative control. See the Customer Service Agreement for further informations.

The only workaround that I can think of would be to 'sell' the institution that holds the domain.

You answered my question, I wanted to own one-- but have to be accredited in order to do so now. Thanks! (Wikipedia lets you down sometimes)

While this might not be the case, instead of .edu you can own .edu.xx (where xx is the country extension). A couple of years ago I purchased .edu.je (Jersey) and my plan was to sell subdomains like casino.edu.je , auto.edu.je and so on! It was a very interesting idea however there was some big contradictions about the seo value behind it and I lost my interest :)
