Eliteness aside, what makes two-letter domains good?

After reading the thread on bs.com, I was wondering--say your company name is Example Kites. Would it really be worth paying $10,000 more for ek.com as opposed to examplekites.com? I can see it as being easier to type, but EK is probably harder to remember than Example Kites.

BritishTelecom.com or BT.com ?

2L domains are so rare, 1L ones are even rarer, i know paypal have x.com, but if a 2L is dropped, you can never get it back, im 99% sure of that, which makes them more valuable

Again, it's the eliteness factor.

BritishTelecom is a mouthful, though.

- Rarity and Prestige
- Shortness (easy to remember, type, brand, market etc)
- Acronym for 100's if not 1000's of companies worldwide, most of which would like to own the corresponding acronym of their company name.

That's what gives two letter combos value, and yes it's worth it IMO.

BTW, 10k for ek.com would be a great deal at that price :)
