BRUSSELS, May 23 (UPI) -- Internet domain names ending with .eu are becoming one of the most popular in the world, according to the European Registry of Internet Domain Names.

The group was tasked by the European Union from April to make it possible for groups and individuals to register a Web site name ending with .eu to indicate that they are of the European Union.

Since .eu opened for general registration on April 7 more than 1.8 million sites now have that ending, with Germany having the highest number of registrants, followed by Britain, while the Netherlands came in third place, EURid said.

The group also said that .eu is now the eighth most popular domain name ending in the world

Cheers to all .eu ownersssssssssss

nice to read this but yet we should wait for a year or two to fully see the fate of .eu. I have couple of .eu so I would also be very happy if they get popular.

I think it`s just speculation. I got about 20 , some good but as italian I can`t see much use in .eu unless they delete ALL ccTLDs of the European Union Countries including .de , .it , etc.

If they have to delete something is .eu (useless extension IMO)

Yes I agree.....but don`t worry they will start thinking that now to make it equal USA will need a ccTLD for every single state so we will see:

.nk New York
.mi Missouri
.cf California
and so on....providing they find a free extension for each one

if they start providing many such extensions then most of the 2-3 words .com domains might not find much use . instead the generic names in that extension would be of better use in my view.

I think that if ICANN don`t hurry up organizing and planning better the internet of the future , we`ll have problems.

Now they just approved the most useless of extensions : .tel

.EU extension should be reserved to EU institutions, for example parliament.eu is a nice URL. Opening registration to anyone doesnt make sense.

I agree with you xmas13, I think this was just one way of making some easy money for them.

It's just ridiculous...

They allow .tel, but reject .xxx (??!!)... I think
it's high time the US gov't stopped interfering
in ICANN's supposed 'decision making process'
and it comes under international control.

I did ok out of .eu, but it was a remarkable sham
and as usual there will be no accountability (or
investigation) in to what really happened at the
top...

Does anyone know what happened to the
umpteen billion (at least) NY-based registrars
that were mysteriously set-up to 'register' .eu
names?

Now i know why they are calling them Landrushes, they have been marketing these so called "Rushes" for 2 years now and the only ones that rushed were the ones the got the worst domains, i dont beleive these guys at all. .eu regs will die down in time and the rest of the "RUSH: will just expire next year. The best domains had been regged by real cybersquatters that will just sit on them or park them somewhere and we wont be seeing any worthwhile sites in this zone for some time. offcourse there "Rushes", you have to rush to pick up the scraps that EURid have left you. So now they will not publish the list just giving the guys who didnt make out with the right trademarks time to get ready for the drops and get these domains again anyway. So the "Scraps" are already eaten. I dont know what these domains are, you dont know, but the sharks do! Well thats Europe for you.We let them register the .US the .BIZ the .com, .net e.t.c... zones they want with Drop lists avaliable everywhere. Sure they want you to go through the list manualy and see what more shit is avaliable to register, and this we will call Land rush 16 or 17. Beware: "These guys are flying high" and we are just Landrushing. I in principle wont register even one domain in that zone. Hell with them and and there rushes, the only thing i dont understand is "Where the hell is ICANN" and why are they being silent on this matter? They gave them the zone in the first place and are just laying back and watching them F&*%k the little guy again and again and "Rushing" up a third time to do it again. Id rather have "VeriSign" then EURid any day.

There is irony in another threads name in this list: ".EU Landrush 2 - Coming June 2006"
Now you guess who will be "coming" and on who's  ??? . Sorry guys coudnt help it. These guys just blow my mind.

:sorry: to all those fine Members from Europe

BUT GOD BLESS THE U.S.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :usa2: :amen: :peace:

Dont get me wrong. Europe is great and offcourse GOD BLESS EUROPE and all that but partialy the answer to your question is FREEDOM and at least a little transparency. EURid would never have gotten away with this sh%t in the U.S. or Canada.

SystemX: The USA probably is the greatest
nation on earth but fraud and corruption goes
on everywhere and I wouldn't want to side
with any particular company/entity just on
the basis of national pride...

ItalianDragon: Yes, I know the videos you are
talking about and they demand many answers,
which, unfortunately, are not forthcoming.

(as an example, go check for 'loose change' on
limewire).

Perhaps European Union itself should also be disolved.
OK that was a joke.

.eu is a great extension IMO. However, it's fate lies in how it will be used (Parked or Developed).
