They way the so called appointed registry is going about it, it will probably be a flop. The so called .EU council are like grandfathers whose sole intent in life is to chatter through their false teeth, not worrying the least about actually getting things done. Wait till you come to the moral uprightness of this extension, it will make the .US Nexus look like a walk in the park in Summer ... it just not worth the hassle imho, and very low resale value potential.

I agree with mole to a certain degree (this part-> "are like grandfathers whose sole intent in life is to chatter through their false teeth"), but my take is that md-long term the .eu TLD does indeed have a gigantic potential in a Union of well over 300 milion people (By May).
lost in the local governments, .eu might just becoming the .com to EU nationals, instead of remembering each nations ccTLD

.EU has every possibility to become large in a couple of years. I se it battling .us as the second domain after .com.

I think the real question is if .eu will be able to compete with .de

we all know how well .de has done for itself, will .eu take its place or fail to gain the same type of popularity?

.de is only popular in Germany and Austria....
so, yes, of course .eu will beat it

I agree. EU is bound to beat DE.

And eu is bound to be somewhat popular since it targets a large wealthy market.

It will also become more popular as Eu expands, which is quite fast at the moment, even if most of the new countries are poorer ones.

if I am not mistaken, .de is the second or third largest domain extension in the world...

I highly doubt .eu will ever become that popular

GT...
that has nothing to do with it.
it is the second largest.
It is the extension for Germany...
.EU includes .de but much larger... :)
think of it as Alberta having it own extension .al (obviously this is an example as that is a ccTLD)
and then Canada comes along. and .CA
No the best example with .ca, but It will make my point.
.de does not have any practical type ins outside of Germany, Austria, and perhaps Southern Africa (and Argentina and Brazil, If you want to know why, ask me )

that doesn't matter, the Germans have embraced their CCTLD more than anyone else in the world and somehow I think many Europeans will prefer to use their CCTLD (.cz, .pl, .sk) rather than .eu

.us is still lagging, so I expect .eu to lag for at least the first few years after it is released

I really hate having the last word.
however, in % wise, the Germans are not the ones that have maximized their ccTLD.
I'll let that to others who like research, and who will not PM me for the answer.
.eu is nothing like .us
You do know that .us existed for ages before it went public right?
it was also targetted at an audience that believed (believes) .com is the national TLD.
things are different here, it is an entire different ballgame.

IMHO .eu is big and short and it will easily beat any ccTLD, Eunited We Stand will have a new meaning. ;) I know that .de is big but .eu is easier to pronounce in most european languages.
