So, the answer (in most cases) is 3 months?

Usually it takes about that long(2~3 months) but it really depends on the registrar. You will need to ask your registrar.

For example, for Godaddy.com, if a domain registration expires, you have up to 12 days to renew the registration. If you have not renewed the registration after 12 days, the domain enters a 30-day redemption period. During the redemption period, you may renew your domain registration for an additional fee by contacting customer support.

One week into the redemption period, the expired domain—assuming that its registration has not been renewed—is placed into a 10-day domain auction, allowing prospective registrants to bid on the domain. The winner of the auction obtains the domain registration ownership two weeks after the auction end date if the original owner fails to renew the domain by the end of the redemption period.

Then it means that I can't backorder some expired domain that was registered at Godaddy (as it will be sold at auction)?

Tnx for so quick replay :)

So, if I backorder some domain at registerfly.com, which is listed at godaddy or snapnames auction, I still have chances to get it without bidding at those auctions?

And what about Enom? I found great name which should be deleted on 26.08.2006, and it's registered at Enom. So, will it be available for registration to everyone, or enom will directly transfer it to highest bidder at their auctions?

normally, 60 days + 5 days
in the last 5 days, it is a period called pending delete.
you could get it at the end of the 5th day, if no one else wants it.
