I kind of get the expired domain thing, you're hoping to get some traffic by what the previous owner had developed. However, so often I see people picking up these domains and redirecting them to a totally unrelated site, like porn. I don't get it.

well this is why you use some PPC parking pages, where you target your content... have a look at trafficz.com or oingo.com and many other parking page providers

Do those parking pages actually do anything other than annoy people with sleazy popups? I mean, do you even recoup the cost of the domain registration? I'd think that traffic would drop off dramatically as other sites that link to that domain realize what happened, and that there's no value in having a link to that domain anymore, they remove it. In fact, those parking pages even devalue the sites linking to them, as it makes it obvious that those sites are not well cared for either. Do people actually do anything worthwhile with the expired domains they get?

those content sites dont provide that much traffic

personally, id try and sell the domain to someone who has a similar site to the domain you just registered

i nearly got an affiliate domain lasy year - that would have been very profitable since i was running affiliate sites - and the guy who got the domain put one of those search engines on it - i could have made a lot of money from getting that domain - instead that person was probably making 50 cents a month from it

But probably would have asked $5000 if you wanted to buy it, though.

yeah i know - i didnt even bother emailing them
but it does highlight that an expired domain can be profitable if you own a similar site or sell the domain to someone with a similar site

plus the expired domain could also have value on its own merit:)
