In 2005, the state of North Carolina, the County of Fosyth, the city of Winston-Salem offered up nearly $15.5 million in incentives to entice Dell into locating here for their new computer production facility.

It worked.

Dell built a gorgeous brand new facility. They have hired about 900 people, of which 600 are of the promised 1500 full time employees.

Today, 4 years later, they announced that they will cease operations here in January 2010. All part time employees, 300, will be let go immediately and the 600 full time will be gone by December.

All jobs will be outsourced to Mexico and other countries.

Yeah. Buy American.

Companies like Intel, Nike, RiteAid, etc, all have recruitment centers in India, and apparently government immigration contacts that help them fast-track work visas. Our production base is gone, and companies are beginning to actually import their workforces from overseas, and plant them right here in the US...

The gloves are off, and Corporate America is swinging on our college graduates and domestic work force harder than ever. The last decade has been particularly brutal. Our country is sinking fast...

Both of you echo my sentiments exactly.

This is just the continuation of the raping of America.

There is never a downside for these businesses. The get handouts by the boatloads, given tax forgiveness by communities, and hold no feelings or remorse towards those being screwed over.

I am not sure if the Dell statement was two sentences long.

It was just 4 years ago this past Monday.

Clarification:

The total given to Dell (State, County, City) was $281 million.

$15.5 million was from the city (which all indications are a big legal battle is brewing over Dell not meeting the stipulations attached to those incentives)

Same thing happened in my hometown area. Navistar received a lot of money from the government to stay and keep people working but two years later they shut down and move to mexico.

The Corporate Globalist's dream is unfolding right before our eyes. Poland lost 2+ million workers to the UK over the last five years. Many of these people have degrees bought and paid for by the Polish tax payer, and they're now washing dishes in England. There is a labor shortage in Poland in every single sector of society, including police, firemen, surgeons, dentists, etc. But, Poland isn't poor enough yet to be used as slave labor for US or Western European manufacturing or production based companies, so it's brain and labor drain with no supplements. Harsh times...

Normally Doc would of posted this in the political/controversial section, So why the change? Certainly not because of the subject matter... Could it be because the section is no longer shown in todays posts, and his objective is to gain the most attention possible? I think so.

All jobs will be outsourced to Mexico and other countries.

Yeah. Buy American.

Please cite your source for this outrageous claim. I've forwarded a link to your claim to the Dell legal department.

Facts:

1. This was a desktop manufacturing plant - desktops have been getting killed by an increase in laptop buyers, and significant pressure by HP and Acer,

2. The company posted a 22 percent decline in revenue in the July quarter, while net income fell 23 percent.

3. Part of the reorganization involves moving some production from Ireland to Poland - those dirty Polish job stealers

4. Any money owed back per the agreements will be paid back according to both Dell and government spokespeople. "In my opinion, the state will be out nothing," said Hoyle, D-Gaston.

Do you people really think we should just force companies to pay people to stand around and make nothing? Maybe you can just make a law to have every company immediately hire 20% more people?

Maybe you should look at how government incentives provide perverse motivations and lead to bad decisions - with all the bailouts, you will see the results of this on a large scale in the near future.

This "eat the rich", corporate bashing stuff gets old. Especially when people make stuff up whole cloth for propaganda value.

I'm just an unabashed libertarian capitalist. Government is the source of all our ills.

First they came for the computer makers,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a computer maker.

Then they came for the doctors,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a doctor.

Then they came for the bloggers,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a blogger.

Then they came for the domainers —
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

Good stuff Rick :D But why hint of Dell's legal department, they have bigger fish to fry like factory closures and disgruntled employees.

I get annoyed when people make sh*t up. Especially on a message board where people tend to be young, impressionable, and believing of their fellow domainers. They post on boards like this instead of on sites where they would be engaged and exposed as ignorant.

If someone wants to be a socialist, fascist, communist, whatever, fine - just be an honest one. I try to stay away from these posts, but when I see people drinking the kool-aid, sometimes I have to speak up.
