not a whole lot.. just exact timing.. luck of the draw.. when myspace/facebook/youtube got really big (pretty much instantly) i think thats when the internet really went mainstream. sure it was getting pretty huge in the very late 90's but eventually anyone and everyone started to get online 5 years ago.

it wasn't just luck of the draw...Friendster failed because they weren't prepared to SCALE UP as quickly as the traffic came. Tons of online businesses fail because they have no real plan in place to deal with surges in traffic, more resources, etc...Online business moves FAST. If you get popular fast and fall apart - people quickly move on. And there are companies out there that will gladly scoop up your lost opportunity.

Friendster may have not been expecting the traffic - but they're probably still kicking themselves everyday for not predicting it.

Nothing, just luck, tipping point etc. There must have been hundreds of projects like Facebook, some probably even better. But Facebook won, it's a lottery...
