Hi Guys,

Today while browsing at sedos' I noticed those two facebook domains selling on the marketplace -

facebook - com.co
facebook - ne

and I thought to myself, hmmm... should a domainer invest in such domains?

(- I know you will not get in trouble just by owning a trademark domain name, it's how you use it that can make things complicated )

I'm very interested to hear what all the experts have to say about these domains,

is that a good investment for a domainer?

maybe buy it now and flip it later for a profit?

should you even get yourself involved handling such a domain?

how much profit are you even able to do with such domain names?

Please feel free to give your take on this & comment away !

steer clear of trademarked domains. you should never invest in facebook domains.

maybe buy it now and flip it later for a profit?

and it worries me that you think you could flip it for a profit... to who? Facebook won't buy it.

Thanks James for replying super fast.....and don't worry :) ...it's all hypothetical & for educational purposes,

I only want to fully understand how to relate to these kind of domain names I encounter every single day - from a professional domaners' point of view,

One question tho - you say - stay away from trademark domain names, and even if you have one who would buy them from you, right!

Then how do you explain the vast interest in those domains from buyers who place a bidding offer?

for instance -

BING.LA - got 3 offers

FACEBOOK.COM.CO - got 2 offers

YOUTUBE.COM.TW - got 5 offers

etc'...

And how do you explain the vast interest in trademark domains typo's' ?

(like: googl, gooogle, facbook, etc')

GOOGL.BE - got 20 offers

FACBOOK.ES - got 5 offers

etc'...

Clearly, there is an interest and market for these type of domain names!

go figure, right!?!

P.S.- I just found out that facebook.ne isn't even registered at all - and it's up for sale at Sedos' marketplace ?!?!?:?:

Names likes these are not good investments.
All you can do is park them and monetize them until you lose them.
Once in a while somebody will get sued to make an example.
Personally I don't think it's worth the risk.

People still go after hot potatoes out of ignorance, or because they have some unrealistic expectations.
There is no shortage of suckers in this industry: http://domainnamewire.com/2008/11/06/porscheme-money-down-the-drain/

There may be some interest from a traffic point of view... Newbies hoping that they can double their investment through parking revenue.

But as Katherine says, it's not worth the risk.

One of the first domains I ever registered was a Facebook name... I learned pretty quickly it was pointless owning it, and swiftly deleted it.

what was your domain name?

was is a typo'?

or was it the exact name?

was it realy so bad that you couldn't even sell it for Roi (return on your investment) ?

It was facebook.(some cctld) - I can't even remember the extension.

It seemed a good idea when I regd it but I realised it was pointless, no one would buy the name, there wasn't any real traffic and there was no point having it...!

So for anyone thinking about investing in trademarked names... Trust me. Don't.

Especially if its trademark holder aggressively protects it.

Just about when I was going to close this issue and go on with the rest of my day, I encountered an interesting Thread here on dnforum -

Thread: Platinum Forums >>> Domains with Traffic (Traffic Domains) >>> Facebook Traffic (facebfook.com)

Here is the link - dnforum(.)com /f116/facebook-traffic-facebfook-com-thread-420047.html

zorag actually sold -

facebfook.com
facebboook.com

I've had these domains for 3 "or 4" years with no issues, they have been parked, used as community traffic, used for offers and various other legitimate campaigns (offers being the most profitable). They have NEVER been used for porn or silly/devious activities attracting unnecessary attention - follow this path, use them wisely, you should be fine!

Guys, I need to see offers nearer the BIN please.. and don't forget to PM me on the other typos, (( I'm letting them ALL go at $3.5k no offers, first come! ))

Stats updated - new BIN $1.9k ---All sold!

Guys...Tell me what do you think about that,

and it kinda answers your question jilo -

and it worries me that you think you could flip it for a profit... to who? Facebook won't buy it.

Questions to ponder:
  • what's the traffic like ?
  • what's the revenue like ? Hint: expect a marked discrepancy between traffic and conversion
Anyway, you can't develop anything stable on domains like that because there is a permanent sword of Damocles hanging over them

Again, you might get away with it, but shit happens sometimes.
This is what happens when you mess up with the wrong people: http://www.thedomains.com/2010/04/1...s-the-guys-sued-by-microsoft-for-2-4-million/

Great points Kate! LOVE the article!!!

But I would like to concentrate on one specific action - flipping!

Those TM lawsuits are mostly against cybersquatters - those who gain profit from these domains' traffic & visitors - "in connection with selling or offering for sale or distributing or advertising --> of goods and services !

But my question is -

What about buying & flipping those type of domains for a bigger profit? - When clearly, it looks legit enough!

This way you're not abusing the company's' TM & you're not interrupting with their traffic & visitors,

and everybody's happy :)

and if you're asking - who's stupid enough to buy these kind of domains from you? and what would they possibly could do with them?

Well... my answer is - Do you really need to know? who cares what the buyer does with them!

if they are willing to buy it from me and pay good money for it, then, I say why not??

OK, so you flip the name. You've found a bigger sucker, congrats. Now are you proud of yourself?

Why am I wrong?

if you're only selling the domain without using it at all --- just buying and selling it right away!

you haven't don anything!? --- at all!

Although you might be right - I personally wouldn't be proud of myself at all, (even tho I didn't squat on that domains' traffic at all!)

but many people would tell you - "THAT'S ONLY BUSINESS!"

P.S.- this is only hypothetical - I don't have any intention on doing it myself!

I'm just trying to make some sense of all those TM selling names out their on the market!?!?

if it was really a TM infringement selling those kind of domains, then all the major marketplaces out there (sedo, afternic, etc') would never had allowed selling those domain names on their marketplace! every single day!! --- don't you think?

it looks like there's something more to it! am I missing something here? :?:
