They are just forwarding to the dot-com.

No biggie. If they were actually out there promotiong .biz and .info on TV commercials, that would be different, and good for the extension.

But in this case, they are just forwarding.

Many in the list above are Fortune 500 companies.

The fact that they are even forwarding, is already a step in the right direction. Obviously, no one in these large red-tape corporate beauracratic system would want to get their heads chopped by suggesting that they pull the .com site entirely.

My point is simply - alternative addressing is taking root in places you couldn't even imagine was happening. It's only a matter of time when more specialised use is made for these more specific extensions.

Well, before .info and .biz....fortune 500's would have .net and .org point to the .com...just like they are doing with these.

For them to actually brand .biz, .info, or .net, when they have already branded .com, would just confuse customers.

If for some reason they cannot secure the dot-com, they may not even turn to another extension...they may just get a longer .com name with inc at the end, or something...

Like armani.com... not owned by the clothing company, owned by a guy named a.r.mani who won in court, so Armani uses armaniexchange.com as there main site...even though they own armani.net, which is the HK site.

I agree. Just look at Oracle. Companies are ditching their meaningless .nets and .orgs for .info and .biz.

Excellent post mole.

I am bullish on .biz. I have three coming out:

http://www.protection.biz (coming soon)
http://www.circle.biz (coming soon)
http://www.canoe.biz

Strangely enough, I have no info's up any more, and traded some hosting services for one of my better .info's. For me, it's all about running a profitable "biz-ness". This is not to say you can't be a small business and still run a profitable dot info site, but unless you have deep pockets like "Sap" or the like, it's pretty tough to live soley on selling info/advertising.

Of course my viewpoint about dot info right now is strictly from an American perspective. In time things could certainly change. It does take time to brand a TLD, just ask Network Solutions. It seems things in Europe are moving faster with respect to the dot info branding so maybe things are not that far off here.

Foot Note: One thing I do like about dot biz is the fact it is actually meant for businesses. As time goes on, and if more and more TLDs roll out, this could be a plus. As far as I know, dot biz is the only TLD that appears to safeguard business interests. You and I may not like that, but down the road you will see how "biz protections" will be a invaluable asset rather than a "drag on it's popularity". Dot biz is growing. As I have said, once more small businesses like myself grow, so to will the advertising budgets which means more "ad time". It's how dot com became known...through small businesses like a 1995-esque Amazon.com getting bigger.

.org, and .net meaningless??? Hardly.

.Biz is meaningingless, we already have an extension for business, ...com!

Mole. You must have spent a fortune on .biz and .info, and are hoping they will make a dent in the scene one day! Good luck!

The thing is that its not just for business but also for personal use, non-profits, health issues & illnesses, social issues, elections and candidates, entertainment and yes PORN.....in other words, like some gleefully say: "its synonymous with the internet itself"....Yes, so far and probably for the near future.

But the real question is: Will this state of affairs persist for ever? Obviously not. The more difficult question is: How long will it be before it all changes (not that .com will dissappear or even become less popular than others)? My answer is: Sooner than you think?

I just dislike .biz. The "z" is too trendy, and no real business is gonna say they are a "biz".

I don't agree with trendiness on the extension. Leave that for the other side of the dot.

This quote takes me back to 1995 when they said this about dot com.

Some of you maybe too young to remember, but some of the things that we are faced with right now, like "will the internet take off" are the same things we were thinking back in 1995. The only difference is we are a little wiser. Point is: History Repeats itself. Those who understand this concept are the ones who make out quite well.

It's all about the business plan, and whether or not you are following a herd, or blazing your own trail. For me, I have no choice but to blaze a new trail. www.Protection.com would be very expensive to try and aquire. Therefore, right now, my 2nd best choice is to make www.Protection.biz work. There are many others who are in my position. As their businesses grow, so too will their ability to promote their "biz" address. The icing on the cake will be that not just anyone can have a "biz" address. I do believe this will be a major selling point of dot biz's in the future. Integrity, protection and uniqueness.

Brandability is the only thing left. That will be up to each dot biz owner. Personally, I don't start out a business thinking I am going to fail, especially not because my web address sounds a bit "trendy". Tell that CNN Network executives who seem to embrace the word. CNN paved the way for other cable news networks to become players. Now all the rest of them have some sort of "biz show".

I am obviously biased in my opinions about dot biz, but I do provide compelling reasons why it will not just go the way of dot org, or dot net. Time will tell though.

My point is, "biz" is a "z" name... its not professional.

It's like drugstore.com advertising, we sell drugz...
or IBM saying, "lowest priced computerz"...

BIZ will never fly :)

My answer to this can be summed up by what Bill Gates said back in 1982: "640k ought to be enough for anybody"

The lesson learned here is: The future is not set in stone, for if it were you'd bet on the Yankees winning the world series year after year, you'd buy as many shares of Microsoft as you could, and finally you wouldn't invent anything new because you'd stick with what you'd "know" would be "king" for years to come.

The very fact that none of above is true is reason enough to diversify, for if something were such a "for-sure" deal, wouldn't we all be planning our dream vacation right now?

...Well, .com is certainly abused these ways, but there are more logical TLDs for most of these. (Except for porn, which, if it's commercial in nature, does logically fit in .com, or .biz for that matter.) Non-profits, social issues, and election sites are more sensibly .org. Personal sites now can be .name. .info can also be used for any of these categories.

Thanks do. I'm getting loads of hits from Google Adwords clicks on my .info names, mostly from geo .com. I'm into B2B, so dents are profitable monsters.
