Fastest Registrar...?

You see the name that everybody who is an active domainer will find if they haven't already found, and they will register if they haven't registered...

... but the whois is currently showing available...

... Who do you reg the name with? Which company? More than 1 company?

...and what's the least time before you see your name in the whois?

If you are asking because you are trying to register a domain and the whois is blank and it does'nt resolve but yet is shows unavailable to reg and think there is some registrar out there that can "beat" the other one to it since someone already reg'd it, it won't happen...I find godaddy blazingly quick and domains start resolving in seconds after registration as well as their whois...how long the whois takes to update depends upon which whois you are looking at, almost ALL will update a new reg within 24 hours max..they are all different in that respect but update from the zone files of the company that has monitors & controls the underlying "root" dns network for .com domains, which is Verisign, they are the one behind everything...once the name is created in the registry it is gone and safe from any other registrar trying to register it...although overlaps do happen the first person to successfully do it gets the domain in their account. Some smaller registrars do not update constantly from the root zone files like the big boys do, if you reg a name with enom or godaddy and then go back and check it will show as taken right away in a second..some of the lesser known companies will let 3 people register the same domain in a half hour time frame before their systems update and show it as taken...hope this helps!

You kind of answered my question.

It's not that I have any particular domain in mind at the moment, but I was more meaning if a domain is showing as available to reg.

In the past I have come across the problem where I registered a nice domain through hostway.com (I'm 90% sure it was hostway) - I get a confirmation email and a receipt for my payment. On checking the whois through the registrar it shows my details, but when I check through 'terminal' (an application on Mac, similar to a dos prompt, where I can check the whois through 'Darwin' or whatever it's called) it shows the domain as unregistered...

Then the next day I check the whois and it is now under someone elses details, so they must have got it before me?! I just don't know how they managed it.

So maybe some registrars collect orders and are manually processed, and others have some automatic way :greenconfused: (which might be what you were saying)

So I would just think that some registrars can't be relied on if I need a domain registering urgently before others get it - because of processing times. In my case above they just refunded me the money and said sorry :sigh2:

I'm not a big fan of Godaddy, but I have domains there and maybe like you said, with them the order goes through straight away.

use godaddy or enom and you wont ever have a problem unless maybe you and someone are registering a domain at the unlikely exact same time..godaddy checkout is a pain I know, but you can zip thru it pretty quickly..and set-up your paypal account so its just a few quick clicks at checkout and you dont have to add in cc info, etc...I can reg a domain at GD in like 30 seconds. You also can always get .com domains for $6.95 thru godaddy by just typing in godaddy in google and clicking on their adsense ad at the top that says register for $6.95...no codes needed!
