One of my domain names recently expired, and I renewed it a little late, two days after it had expired. I registered with Oriweb, for $13.95 I believe. (I know I'm probably paying more than I need to.) Anway after I registered, they sent me an e-mail requesting an additional $5. They sent this e-mail.

Once a domain expires, the registrar charges us a fee to renew it so we have

to pass that onto the customer. In addition, once a domain expires, it

loses all of it's contact info and it's removed from our database. So we

have to reset all of the contact info so that you appear as the owner on

whois and we also have to remove it from our expired database and add it

back to our current database. So the $5 helps offset some of these costs

and time it takes. The fee is never charged as long as a domain is renewed

prior to expiring. And you can renew the domain at any time up to 10 years.

Is this really necessary? What kind of fee charged by the registrar are they talking about?

It seeems like they are an enom reseller.After your domain expires, you get a pending approval of 30 days and after that all info is removed.
I dont think so the info is removed till 30 days after the domain is expired.

From ICANN:

"At the conclusion of the registration period, failure by or on behalf of the Registered Name Holder to consent that the registration be renewed within the time specified in a second notice or reminder shall, in the absence of extenuating circumstances, result in cancellation of the registration by the end of the auto-renew grace period (although registrars may choose to cancel the name earlier). As a mechanism for enforcing this requirement, registries may elect to delete names for which an explicit renew command has not been received prior to the expiration of the grace period.

Extenuating circumstances are defined as:

* UDRP action
* valid court order
* failure of a registrars renewal process (which does not include failure of a registrant to respond)
* the domain name is used by a nameserver that provides DNS service to third parties (additional time may be required to migrate the records managed by the nameserver)
* the registrant is subject to bankruptcy proceedings
* payment dispute (where a registrant claims to have paid for a renewal, or a discrepancy in the amount paid)
* billing dispute (where a registrant disputes the amount on a bill)
* domain name subject to litigation in a court of competent jurisdiction
* other circumstance as approved specifically by ICANN"
