Question:

What would be better to register (first), .CN investment-wise:
A great name in .CN
or:
That same great name in .COM.CN ?

Yes, I realize that I could register both if both are available, but still the question remains...

Thanks in advance!

The 2nd level tld, definitely.

If you have the spare change, then the .com.cn.

These 2ld.cn names were only launched in March this year, so they are still pretty much new kids on the block. Be prepared to wait till to at least 2005 for traction to develop on these 2ld addresses.

I'm not really a big fan of .cn (have only ONE 3-letter 2nd-level). mole is correct in pointing out the dilemma that .cn is better BUT you'll need to wait a while (a couple of years actually) before cashing in. For now, the Chinese market is more familiar with .com.cn, just like the British are with .co.uk. So grab both if you can, you may be able to sell the 3rd-level .cn sooner.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your insights! :)

BTW, any idea how/if these 2nd level .CNs are promoted in China? Like you said, they're very familiar with the .com.cn etc, but maybe the Chinese government, or (big) business is also heavily promoting the 2nd levelers? Maybe even something like what the US government is doing with their .Kids.us!?

CHEERS!

Externally, they tie up with neustar.cn, internally cnnic.net is doing the promotion.

If you can read Chinese, you can go to:

http://www.china-channel.com/article_news.asp
(maybe use altavista babel translator?)

there are some good articles and comments by the registrars and cnnic on cn market.
