Who do you prefer has their domain(s)?

Do you prefer to have it so you don't have to worry about them not renewing, not knowing how to do DNS, etc..

or

Do you prefer that your client owns the domain and have them point the DNS to your host?

I do not want to be responsible should the name drop, delete, be pulled, or be subject to a WIPO or URDP.

I want the WHOIS to reflect the domain owner.

No where in that WHOIS do I want my name or business to appear.

Only my sites and my domains will have my info...no where else.

If you change the WHOIS to reflect someone else as the holder while you are in posession of the domain, this could also be a violation of the terms.

That would be a matter that hopefully will be addressed by one of the legal eagles here on DNF.

No chance of a TM / WIPO (or at <1% chance). I have the primary WhoIs information as me and the secondary as the client.

The situation is that I did a web site for her and she went on to bigger and better designers (I'm not worried - I was resizing and uploading dozens of photos a week for her). The new company insisted that I give them my login and password to my GoDaddy account and I said, politely, hell no. They gave me the DNS settings as per my request (and I did not give them the auth code since the client never asked me to give it to them).

Now, renewals are coming up. I've sent her an email asking her what she'd like to have done with the domains:

1) (Preferred) - she set up a free account with GoDaddy and I can push them to her account. I can show her (I'll make a quick ebook) how to set up auto renewals, change account information, check / change DNS etc.

2) (Recommended if she doens't want them) - I keep the domains and she sends me a check each year for renewals.

3) (not recommended at all) - I unlock them and give her the authorization codes so she can have whoever she wants to pull them into their own account with their own registrar (I spent a few paragraphs showing her why this is not recommended).

I have many emails to her explaining that I am just holding them for her etc... and I will do with the domains as she wants me to (in fact, they've only done a site for one of the domains, not the other).

I always make my customers responsible for their own names. If I were to drop dead, go to jail, whatever, I want them to have the ability to take control over their property. I do occaisonally have clients names in my accounts / register them on their behalf, but make them take ownership before renewal.

Whatever the client wants is what I will do. The majority have me manage their domains so they do not have to worry about renewals, etc. There are a few that manage their domains themselves.

Create a free account at GD and then push the domain and renew it for here.
Ask 10 bux from heer explaining about the renewal fee and then give her the details for login. Simple

Specific to Godaddy you should have them keep the domain in their name.
They can give you access to whatever name(s) they want from inside their godaady account.

I do this for a client. He had the name already and wanted me to work on it. He gave me access to his name via MY GD account.

Not sure what it was call. I don't use godaddy unless I have to.

Otherwise I do what the client wants, explaining along the way the pros/cons about each of their questions.

I think it is called Account Executive or something where you can assign different users to manage certain names in your account.

But regarding any registrar - If you are registering the domains or managing them, they should always stay in the clients name.
