I have played with forums before on a couple of my sites but only had them overun by spammers. Has anyone got any ideas how to prevent this or is it a case of choosing the best forum software with easy management tool to clean the forum up?

Im particularly intrested in apps that have built in email confirmations for new registrations and where I can easily deleted accounts and all previous posts from obvious spammers.

Thanks

I've found an excellent captcha (for phpBB) script that eliminated virtually all of the spammers. I used to get 3-10 registrations and 5-15 posts a day. Once I installed the captcha and killed the spammer accounts, only one has gottenthough in 3 months.

I have the script in one of my directories, I'll see if I can find it.

Edit to not double-post:

*lol* phpBB is free no matter what. :)

Try the captcha I posted, it will require some editing for the code but the directions are excellent, they tell you what file needs to be changed, and exactly what needs to be replaced or added.

Just backup the entire forum (preferably local) before you do any editing incase a mistake is made (which happens often). :)

Edit:

Also, if you're worried because you don't know much about php, the extent of my php knowledge is the require() command but I was able to add the pack onto my first forum in less than 30 minutes, now it takes me less than 5. It will either be copying files into the forum directory or find, copy, paste.

CAPTCHA is fine for stopping automated bot style posting however doesn't address the issue of content spam per say which is what Askimet is targeted towards, a learning and collaborative system for spam detection. A quick google search shows me there's a bunch of support for phpBB http://www.google.com/search?q=phpbb+askimet

Askimet also isn't the silver bullet solution we've found it's more about considering the whole problem ... you want to block automated spam attacks so a system like CAPTCHA is good however you also want an IP detection system that will watch for bad behavior and warn / block offending IP ... you want to make it 'difficult' for spammers to create accounts and thus slow them down however you don't want to make it unreasonable for real people so you need a registration system that is ok for a member but a pain for a spammer who just wants a quick hit (ie. an activation key email who's back end also checks for abuse) ... and finally in any kind of 'community' system you want to enlist the help of volunteers who want to keep their place spam free too and reward them for their efforts.

Sorry for the ramble, it's late here, but we've been running large community sites for a while now and probably the best lesson I've learnt is it's 30% technology, 30% process and 30%++ hard work ...
