Haven't spoken French in 20 yrs, and I wasn't that good at it back then, so I thought I'd check to see if anyone can help.

I just picked up meublemaison.com and I want to make certain I know what I've got. A Google exact match search, from the US, returns 2.5 million results and Google Adwords indicates, French and Canadian average monthly searches total 256K. Does meuble maison translate exactly to home furniture? It sounds like a good generic, but is it?

Thanks for your help

Well.... not exactly a generic, althouhg it is not too bad. "Meuble" is singular, it means "a piece of furniture". A shop selling furniture would always be called a "magasin de meubles", with s - plural. The equivalent of furniture would be "l'ameublement" or "le mobilier". But usually "meubles" in the plural is used for describing furniture in general.

Home furniture would rather translate into: "mobilier de maison" or "meubles de maison" or "ameublement de maison".

However, small ads would often skip the "de". Thus you would see a small ad saying "meuble maison à vendre" (for one piece) or "meubles maison à vendre" (if there are several pieces of furniture for sale). Similarly, you would see Adsense ads offering "mobilier maison", since they need to keep the number of words as short as possible.

So, while it is not really a generic, indeed it would bring many results in a Google search.

I leave it to other French-speaking people to add comments and provide suggestions.

Thanks very much for that background. It's very helpful. I also discovered, thanks to another DNF member pointing it out, that the numbers I was looking at were not for exact search. Exact search is more like 500 per month, rather than 256K. Still, might be useful for someone.

Thanks again.

Here I get 246k per month in France.
