Jan 1 2005.. 20 years from the first domain nordu.net...

nordu.net was used for the first ever ROOT server (nic.nordu.net). It was techinically the first ever domain name, as it was created by the registry (for use by the registry) on DAY 1, before domains were allowed to be officially registered.

The first 10 domain names registered were as follows

SYMBOLICS.COM 15 Mar 85 (holds distinction for being first ever registered name)

http://www.namefaqs.com/question/qstId/25.html

Its been a long way to whats its now..

Lets celebrate this event..

As an interesting sidenote, it took 16 months for the first 100 domain names to be registered, and 32 months for the first 100 .com domains. They were free (meaning no cost) until 1995.

Wow if only I was old enough and not Amish I could have had one of these or a 1 letter.com or somthing...

At the time, the Internet was run by geeks who only knew how to label extensions after DOS files like exe.com and cryptic networks.

It's a whole new ballgame today post 2000, extensions finally have true real world meaning - .INFO for information and .BIZ for business.

The World Wide Web only starting kicking into mainstream sometime 1995, and it was an expensive (connection costs) and painful experience with those 14k modems, content really sucked big time.

You also had to specify DNS servers to apply for a name.

.co.in still needs one to specify DNS servers to apply for a name.. and there would be a lot more countries still doing the same..

Yes, but at the time, who the hell knew what Domain Name Servers were? Now if you need a DNS, you just go to eNom and buy DNS hosting for $4 then use that anywhere.

'85 to '95 many things were still developing. Much slower computers, modems, etc, and most people knew little about the Internet.

And many really great dot coms were still available in the early- and mid-90s!

'95 to '05 has seen unbelievable growth!

What's really interesting about that is there is a whole generation now who have grown up in a world where there was always an internet for them.

I remember learning how to type on a manual typewriter 15 years before the first domain name was even a reality, and feeling like i was really ahead of the curve and would really be able to get a great summer job with the skill earning $2.50 an hour. My youngest son, born in 1985, got a summer job doing data entry and some tech support work for $12 an hour last summer.

Sorry.. I guess i'm a little off topic... but for most of you this is what you've always known, for some of us old farts it's an amazing thing to look at the last 20 years and see how far it has all come...
