What is the biggest obstacle preventing wider convergence of the Internet with television ?

A- Connection Speed not fast enough

B- Not enough streaming content aggregated

C- No sufficient gadgetry to allow for navigation ability

D- All of the above

E- None of the above

Bonus - what year will all of the above problems be solved ?

The US is so far behind with the speed of the internet. It is not like the technology isn't there. I'll vote A.

I am surprised DNF doesn't have a poll feature built into vBulletin.

Not sure why you feel that it will converge with the television.

If you are talking about the convergence of the television spectrum being integrated with mobile internet, that just got approved. The FCC has allowed mobile internet to use the remaining television spectrum being that the new digital spectrum have been auctioned.

How long the technology goes into effect is just a matter of time.

Look for blazingly fast mobile connectivity, downloads, and uploads.

I will do my best to re-find this article I read the other day.

The television is the FOCAL MEDIA POINT for the average American family. It will converge at some point - its just a matter of when ? Hence my question.

The Coming Wireless Revolution
Gadgets that operate over television frequencies promise to transform the wireless landscape.

If you believe some radio researchers and engineers, within the next couple of years, high-bandwidth, far-reaching wireless Internet signals will soon blanket the nation. Thanks to a decision by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) last week, megahertz frequency bands that were previously allocated to television broadcasters will be opened to other device manufacturers. The frequency liberation means that future wireless gadgets will be able to blast tens of megabits per second of data over hundreds of kilometers. They will cover previously unreachable parts of the country with Internet signals, enable faster Web browsing on mobile devices, and even make in-car Internet and car-to-car wireless communication more realistic.

I do see your point.

But not sure how long that will remain the focal point of the American family.

Gaming like Wii and Xbox and these other supped up gaming that connect to the internet may already be nudging that out of the way.

Personally, I believe it is already losing ground to the gaming industry and losing overall market share to the 4th media, the internet.

And there has been a noticable shift and increase in spending in what will become the 5th media, the mobile internet.

Good read

Actually, I would have to go with none of the above.

Sorry, I was sitting here busting a gut.

While we are have this discussion, I just recieved and IM from a friend (and a DNF member)

just rented star wars: the clone wars on itunes

gonna lay in bed and watch it on my ipod
hells yeah :)

This is exactly what I am referring to.

There is a whole new generation of gadgetry folks out there.

I seriously see a huge drop in television revenue quickly approaching.

Major businesses have already announced they will not advertise on the superbowl.

and something I find odd is this news:

Slumping Ratings, Low Attendance Prompt NASCAR Cuts

WINSTON-SALEM -- Slumping TV ratings and lower-than-projected race attendance has prompted NASCAR teams to cut jobs.
__________________________

This really surprised me and caught me off guard.

Down viewer ratings? I would have thought this was not prone to this.

It will have a major impact locally.

This is where WiMax was a great idea but took way too long to implement. It would have been great in theory. But not in cost now.

Plus, technology has almost made WiMax not necessary due to increased speeds and range.

Now this news of merging television band wavelengths with wireless will most likely leave television suffering even a lower audience.

So, my answer would be E, none of the above.

I'm still develop a big project to connect the web on the tv.
I've plan to buy a digital channel (on Sky), create a webfarm and with a special digital tecnology (I can't say here what technology is but it's an innovate tech) point the servers on the tv channel.
So you can navigate on the web via tv (with a special remote control my staff create).
You can also point every site on the channel with satellite connections.

Just imagine how much money you can make with it.
It's a multimillion dollars project.
I still working on this.

I've make the project (business plan), I've rise a part of the funds (mid - high xxx, xxx) but I can't found the other part of the money (another mid - high xxx, xxx).
I'm still looking.

Internet on the tv is the future.

It looks like you will need to buy my domain, TVD dot com, for your project. Of course, that is if you want the best domain name for it. :) ;)

Since I'm hungry right now; if you can get me some good italian spaghetti bolognese, with some fresh basil, italian bread and parmeggiano reggiano, I'll give you a good discount. :) :hungry:

I would love to see some literature on this. Totally lost here why people thing web and TV is the future.

Not disagreeing with the concept, but are we talking wireless? and wireless TV?

I just personally think static television is dying but mobile wireless television is gaining ground.

Please, stop the torture now. No more italian food talk. I'll agree to anything. Just stop the torture.

Nice post Carter.

But personally I think having everything on a laptop sized computer is the future. Internet, proper SkyTV, the laptop can be connected to a proper big screen for SkyTv for the family etc.
By Laptop I mean, something which is as practical as modern laptops, but more mobile and wireless. (this is the future imo).

The thing about the internet is, many dont like the freedom it grants, especially Govt institutions. I have read dozens of papers where the American Govt in particular want to impose certain restrictions on the net.
With an attitude like that, they are holding the internet back.

Technologically speaking, we need a lot more bandwidth, more investment in the infrastructure required. New and improved wireless technology will be revolutionary in this regard.

Youtube is a good example of wanting to bring TV on the net. They invested heavily in infrastructure for their bandwidth requirements, and as you can see the content on Youtube came in masses from people all over the world. More investment in broadband technology would mean Youtube like sites, but in HDTV.
But once again, the freedom factor comes in. Youtube has been hampered by copyright claims, and this has been a serious blow to TV on the net.

If the internet is given a chance, then I believe the TV and Radio might aswell be dead. With wireless and mobile devices, you can have TV and Radio through the internet anywhere.
But there are too many people who are concerned about piracy of the content, and their inability to make money if the internet replaces TV and Radio.

Imo, its inevitable. Wireless and Mobile Internet is the future.
