I'm new and still figuring out how to value these domains, and I've posted a couple of so-so domains I thought would be worth more. I'd like to learn, so if it's all right, let me throw these out, explain my thinking, and people can critique my reasoning so I can do better.

Here are two domains I've had in my inventory that I think would be good ones.

gameshockwave.com
gamesshockwave.com

Here is my reasoning. For December 2002, Overture shows 206,370 searches for the phrase "shock wave" and 68,848 searches for the phrase "shock wave game." Yes, it would be ideal if the word game was after the term shockwave in the domains, but a good title meta tag, liberal use of the phrase 'shockwave games' or 'shockwave game' in the web page, and a few links to the site should still get good search engine positioning and pick up a large chunk of this traffic.

Site development would be easy. There are plenty of places to get free shockwave games to put on the sites so they could be made into nice free game sites with a day or two of programming time (the placeholder gambling stuff I have on there now is crude and not the best use).

Making money...I don't know much about making money with free game sites, but there are a lot of them out there so it must be worthwhile.

Based on this, I would expect a decent valuation for the domains.

Where am I going wrong?

Hi Ed

Good to see a newbie clarifying their position and puting time effort and thought into your question rather than just "throwing a name up" and hoping people here say "it's worth thousands!" Well done :)

Your questions are good and i too look forward to some of the more experienced around here showing you the courtesy of a detailed reply.

For my 2 cents from limited knowledge, the reason/s I think you will only recieve valuations like the one above from DrWho (which I think is realistic) is as follows:

The fact that OV shows 206,370 searches for the phrase "shock wave" and 68,848 searches for the phrase "shock wave game" is irrelevant to your domain names in terms of search engine ranking because your domain name is not a term with 2 or 3 words it is in fact 1 word "gameshockwave". If you search for this 1 word in OV you will see 0 (zero) searches.

My understanding of SE ranking with domain names in this type of situation is that if you in fact had www.game-shock-wave.com or www.game-shockwave.com the search stats that your refer to at OV would be more relevant given the SE will recognize the words seperated by the hyphens.

So, in appraising these names in relation to them being of any value or assistance with the type of website you intend to have or further develop, they may as well be www.nogameshere.com :) will have a similar affect, ie basically none.

As I said, I am just learning too and would be more than happy to stand corrected if need be.

Cheers
Dingo
