I'm in the process of finalizing the deal on the .net and .org of a capital city, a city with a population of over 3.5 million.

I wanna know how these City .nets, .orgs do as developed sites, as compared to parking?

Most of the top country and city names are developed in the .net, .org and .com extensions, so geo names must be doing better developed than parked.

Anybody with some experience in this field care to give any opinions? It would help in planning out what to do with the names once I have control of them.

Sashas, they do very well.

One piece of advice... Go after the long-tail search terms first, you'll see traffic do really well if you do this.

thanks Scott. I understand the part about longer tail search terms, but wouldn't a capital city .net/.org get decent traffic by itself?

not necessarily. would depend on a case by case basis.

they are nice things to have.

i thought you said other day you wouldn't develop a non .com as that would be just give traffic to the com owner?

I thought it was a strange thing to say at time.
I'm sure you've checked the .com, and if its parked, its helping you out .
If you build an interesting site, you will get return customers.
The visitors to the the parked page will never return.

Most of the top country and city names are developed in the .net, .org and .com extensions, so geo names must be doing better developed than parked.

everything does better developed than parked .
be prepared to get a good site deeveloped and to work at it though. results will take time. this and good seo are actually the most important things.

development can be very satisfying though, and if you have a good name will add to your domain exponentially. again takes time and effort though.

I know Pred. I'm still wary of developing a non .com name, simply because the idea of some random guy benefiting from my hard work bothers me.

Thats why I'm asking these questions. Looks like I'll end up selling the names, not developing.

For my big development project, you can be sure I'll get the best .com I can :)

appreciate what you're saying.

there are a few ways to look at it though.

search sierra leone for example

it pulls up this on google:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=si...s=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a

you'll see .orgs all over front page, even hyphenated.
people will tell you they're worthless. :uhoh:
now, terms like paris, new york, united kingdom etc are obviously far more competive and harder to get up the rankings.

i own sierra-leone.com and am just starting to develop now, i hope it will get up the rankings, it has everything in its favour to.

in my opinion, you should lightly develop, put a forum on each too and leave a year if you can, value will rise a lot because of traffic.
initial traffic is nice dont get me wrong, we all want it, but once you get going , it should come.

also domains like you say you are buying , try approaching endusers, you really must
good luck

Bleeding traffic to the .com has a lot to do with how people are getting to the site. For a developed geo name, most of your visits would probably search engine so the keyword weight is more important than the extension. For a product domain thats being advertised in other media like TV, developing the .net would be a much bigger mistake.

Puranjay I have something to say here also :)
These direct city names com net or org will do very well when developed. As Pred mentioned it is case by case but overall success rate is high when developed, it all comes to keyword power, that is keyword itself as the domain name.

As to your dot com love, I am an avid dot com lover also, what the heck there are 1000's of dot com lovers like you and me, While saying that I have noticed something when it comes to direct keyword domains and search engine results, astonishingly extn of the domain is ignored in serps often when the developed site is highly relevant to the topic with added seo effort. This doesn't mean that these are often on the first page of SE results but they are ending up in 1st or 2nd pages driving enormous traffic to the site.

I have one example(the site in question is mine), please check out this link http://www.google.com/search?q=free+fonts&hl=en&start=10&sa=N .
This site is on 1st page, 2nd page and so on, it changes all the time but the point is when you have a nice keyword domain you can very well develop it and make it a success, this will just be a good addition to your beloved dot com websites network if any.

PS: When you click that link you will find a .co.in domain in 3rd or 4th position, I will remove the google link above in a day or so.
