This topic is for discussion of "end user sales".

Questions for discussion:

What? What type of domains are best for end users?

How? How to get end user sales, what techniques are most effective?

Where? Where to find end users?

Who? Who is it best to contact about purchasing domains?

Google for potentials, and then use the telephone, followed by FedEx. Hard work, but the best way.

The best names for endusers are domains about products & services, one word dictionary, LLL.com.

Searching on Google is a good start but there must be more methods. I have used email mostly with a standard proposal template. I am sure phone calls can be more effective if you know what you're doing. Not sure about sending letters.

Trying to generate more discussion of end user sales methods, or domainbaiting as I will call it.

I like phone calls. That way you make sure you're speaking with the right person. A lot of times when you send emails, they don't actually go to management. They get ignored. If you phone, you are better off finding the person in charge.

My 2 cents.
One problem I've encountered is that the prospective end-user (business owner/layman) doesn't understand how he would actually gain ownership of this intangible item.
In addition, I also explain the obvious: how owning this name might help their business.

One email that has netted some sales:
Dear,
The premium generic domain name xxxxxxxxxx.org is now available to you for $XXX, less than the cost of a newspaper advertisement. The name receives quite a bit of natural type-in traffic from those specifically seeking information on xxxxxxxxxx (or perhaps seeking your web site) so it makes sense that you should own the name. You could then redirect that traffic to your own site if you wished.
Strong metrics:
-Distinctive & Specific
-Two Key Words
-Googles 266,000 for "xxxxxxxxxx"
-Product category
-Not the .com (which would cost thousands), the .org extension lends credibility & actually works with this name
Transfer would be smooth & fast. I'll unlock the name & supply you the authinfo code. As I'm sure you know, you simply supply that info to your registrar and complete transfer takes about 3-5 days. Payment to me would be via secure PayPal.com (my account is this email address or by check).
xxxxxxxxxx.org will provide you a nice generic presence on the Internet with added sales leads and the $XXX is a nominal price, so I thought you might be interested. Please let me know if you have any questions and thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Name
Address
Phone number
Email
Internet addresses are like property, valuable pieces of real estate and I believe a premium storefront like xxxxxxxxxx.org will retail in the $xx,xxx range in just a few years.

Tried this way with almost the same content above but failed to get even a single reply from about 40 sent mails.

Was the question about how to find "End User" or was it how to get the "End User" to find you?

Generic 1-word .COM domains and short acronym .COM domains (2-4 letters) is definitely the best end-user "bait" IMO. The more Google results, the more potential end-users!

The end-user sales I've had so far (not too many), have all been because I've been contacted by the end-user. I have done some active marketing of domains towards end-users, but with no luck. I believe that; if your domain is good, you will eventually be contacted by an end-user.

That's my 0.126532 NOK (2 cents).

Why don't you write your own content? If you're going after end-users, a personalized e-mail proposal is mandatory.

Most end-user sales are in the 'upto $5k' range - check out the kind of names that AfternicDLS sell each week on DNJournal. Two and three word descriptive .coms for the most part.

There is no simple answer, other than putting in the hours. If googling for leads, always target the companies in the sponsored section first; they have some level of understanding about names and traffic. Also, look through trade magazines relevent to the names you're pushing to find potentials.

Who? Who is it best to contact about purchasing domains?

As high up in the organization as possible, and/or, head of sales; if you can convince him that it'll drive sales, he'll convince his bosses. Don't bother with the technical bods or their webmaster - complete waste of time in my experience; they have no commercial sense and usually are getting paid for their seo skills!

If sending a standardised email, don't expect more than about a 1% reply rate, and four out of five replies will be to say 'no thanks'.

You will increase your response rate dramatically if you take the time to personalise each mail, addressing it to someone specifically and adding something about their business.

Pcp Said it best. By no means the only way to sell to end users. But, if your portfolio is relatively good, potential buyers will contact you. The solicitations you get is by far the best way to determine domain names worth selling to end users.

Thanks for the great response!

I have used Google to find potential end users. Many of the results end up being a small organization or an informational site. Many of the Sponsors are also not very targeted.

It seems difficult to get good contact information for some companies. I would assume it is best to try more than one method to contact end users. I have been using email mostly and of course a certain percent of emails are undeliverable.

I agree it is better to contact the person who is able to make these decisions. It may be more effective to personalize emails but that takes a certain amount of time and research.

This seems to be somewhat true. I have had very little responses using email with mostly standardized messages.

In fact, after sending around 100 emails the last few days for several domains I received a response from only one end user which was "No thanks".

Also I received dozens of "Undeliverable" messages.

For those that are calling, .. it is obvious that no one likes to be cold called. It raises an immediate barrier and most people are automatically put on the defensive when they think they are being 'sold to'. So the question is, how do you warm them up? What do you say? Do you have a script?
