In case if you have not read it folks! May be a good article for newbees!

I have been in the game for almost 3 years. In reading over the posts on the Google forum I found no real wisdom as to how to get listed. I sent this out to all of my customers in order to get them to see what it takes to get a good listings in Google. Maybe 1 or 2 listened. I hope you find this useful. I am taking out my website url so its not seen as spam.

Practical Information for Your Website

Most of what I am going inform you of in this letter is reserved for webmasters who know how to get sites into Google. Since Google is one of the best things since sliced bread I will give you some ideas to apply to your web site. I have done this with one of my sites and it is doing well for not doing any work in the past 3 weeks, its also making some money for me.

This is the general way I go about making a site that I think I can get good listings under.
1. I check the numbers and see how much competition there is for the keyword(s). Know the keywords people are searching for and make a site according to that information.
2. Check for common misspellings, most Americans do not spell to well.
3. Make sure that you are not targeting 1 keyword or you will not get it. I have seen it no less than 100 times in the past 2.5 years. Spread out your keywords so you can maximize the number of ways people find your site. It is better to have more keywords so that the customer has a greater chance of finding you. Its better to have 50 keywords that bring one customer than one keyword that brings 50 visitors. The whole putting your eggs in one basket comes to mind here.
4. Select a domain that has the main keyword in it and use hyphens to separate the keywords.

These steps are important to remember you have to work backwards on the Internet. Working backwards means using the above mentioned points in that order. Find what someone is looking for, become an expert on the item and make a site based on the product and keywords. In most cases you already have a web site so now you are asking since the damage is done, what can I do now? I am so glad you asked you this question. I will have a few suggestions that will not hurt your site and in the past has helped many sites get into Google as well as many other search engines.

Keep in mind no single one of these is a silver bullet, however all of them used and compiled into one site will make for a better site.

1. What do you want to communicate with your website. Make the intentions of you site clear so a visitor is not asking where do I buy or how do I obtain the product.
2. Is your site easy to navigate? Example most people on the net are use to using the left hand side of the screen for navigation. How do people get around your website?
3. Text links are priceless when it comes to having your customer read through your web site. Now you are asking how do I do this. Well through out this letter I will use a site that has good listings from applying all of the strategies mentioned in the email or at least most of them. The site is www.mysite.com. If you go to the site you will see that there are links through out the site in the text. When a keyword comes up you see that it is a link and you need not look any further for what you want.
4. Does you site have original text? How is the verbiage set up, is it set up for someone who doesn’t know what the heck a model 4432 super flux capacitor, tell them it’s a super plunger? Dummy it up for the customer, but at the same time do not insult their intelligence.
5. How is your site themed? That basically means what is your site about. Example if I wanted to sell a used car on a site I would not have links on the site that go to an online casino.
6. How much useful information is on your site. On my site the owner wants to sell the a product, but also has information and support for the product. The more pages you have the better.
7. The size of your site is also something you want to take into consideration as well. If your site has too many pictures or the customer has to scroll forever to get to the bottom they will leave. The average numbers show that most people leave a site within the first 7 seconds. You have to make your pages short but sweet and at the same time convey your point. That comes down to finding out what people are looking for.
8. This is a biggie here. How much extra stuff do you have in your HTML code that is not necessary. Most programs that are used to make web pages are made by kids who want to show momma how I designed a program the makes web pages. So you will get junk in your Meta code. Java script while it has its place it is not on a site you wish to make money on, in most cases. Another one is Flash, that too has its place but most people are not running PCs that will be able to see it, so if you do have a link that says Flash site______HTML site.
9. Understand that people are not all working off of a T3 modem and running a brand new super computer. So you have to play to the lowest common denominator which mean you site has to load for the slowest PC, smallest monitor, slowest internet connection, and cater to the most simple of people.
10. Here is a large one you must take into consideration. Linking to other sites. Remember there is no silver bullet, but this one here is of the utmost importance for getting into Google. The best way I have found to do this is to type in some of your keywords, then look at the sites that are in the first 10-20. Draw up an email that has mutual benefit for both you and them. In good faith put a link on your site that is to their web site and ask them if they would do the same. You win some and lose some in this area, but that’s why we are looking in the top 20. Remember this one thing: Do not link to a site that is a link farm. A link farm is a site that has about 100-200 links to other sites that are not 100% related to your product. See #5 above of more info.
11. Since you are looking to show up under your keyword(s) you need to make a page specific to that keyword. You will want to use text links in the text and have at least 200 words of text on the page describing the product in detail, don’t forget to dummy it up for the simple folk, as well as have some benefits of the product.
12. A sales pitch is important, but you don’t want pages to read like a sales pitch. You want it to read like you are telling you best buddy that you just found something of great worth and from there tell your buddy how they can get it. You buddy is your buddy because you can dispatch with the small talk and get right into the honesty, have you buddy be honest and up front about your sales pitch.
13. The use of META TAGS is an important part of getting listed. In most search engines they will use them as your description. Now some engines do not and that is something you have to take into consideration I will get into in point 14. In the Meta tags you want you keyword for that page at least once in the Description Meta tag, once in the Keyword tag and use the keyword as a title of the page.
14. Keyword location in Google is a tough one. Do a search in google and then look at the description and notice the amount of times the keyword is located and where the keywords are located. Then click on the website, and take notes here, notice where they are. Usually it’s the first occurrences on the site, which includes the Meta information.
15. Now the other part of getting Search Engine Spiders to see your keyword in you site is to make it clear for them. Youtellmewhichsentenceisclearerthisoneor. You_tell_me_which_sentence_is_clearer_this_one_or_ this_one. That is how search engines see your pages. It easier to read for you the user and for the search engine spiders.
16. H1 tags are of great importance as well. The search engines use them to distinguish important text from the regular text. Now you are probably thinking that I can make my whole site one big H1 tag, right? Flat out WRONG. You want to use these for the top of the page and use it sparingly. Once on each page for the title of the page.
17. The use of bold words is all to often misunderstood and misused by far too many people. As many people do the all caps words and then bold them its annoying. So you want to use it sparingly too. Use the bold like this; <B>Today</B> there is a <B>Special</B> on all <b>Pilot</b> ink pens <b>50% off</b> today only. You see how the words stick out and are not annoying like the all caps and bolded sentences, that’s the proper way to use it. Yes you can use this in conjunction with the H1 tags.
18. Most people when they read its top to bottom left to right, group words to form sentences. So now you know this we will learn what skimming a web site looks like. If you look up at #17 you will see that what sticks out is the bold and that’s about it. Where as you look at #15 and 14 the urls stick out like a sore thumb. That is what you have to show you customers the most important thing is getting them to find the main point of your spheel and buy the product. So show them what they came to the site for and make those things stick out. Once again moderation is the key here.
19. You want the whole web site to link together for 2 reasons. First is for the customers wanting to get around you site without having to use the back button. Second is for the search engine spiders to follow your site and spider the whole site.
20. You say you have the best prices, who cares. Show the customer you have the best price on a selected item. Now this is a tricky part, not that you are trying to fool a customer, you are proving that you price is the lowest of 5 other sites. Your site could giving 4 companies that have the same product and the prices. Take your pick as to which one you would choose. Show the customer you have the best prices on a product don’t tell them.
21. Content of your website is what will keep people coming back for more business. You need content on your website otherwise it’s a dry an boring site that nobody will return to. It’s like the monotone teacher in High School, in whose class everyone fell asleep. Your web site should have fresh and compelling content for your customer to come back to. As a general rule I try to add one page per week of unique content. Here is an idea for you, perform a test to see durable your product is (if applicable note you should not consider this if you sell premium china) in comparison. This is kind of a repeat of an earlier point.

Bottom line is you want to make sales on your site, so you need to give the customer a reason to come back to your site. You have to hook them in the first 5 seconds so they don’t back out. The Internet is not fully understood by most people who have a website. As you already know, just because you have a site on the Internet it does not mean anything, all it means is that you have to work at keeping your customers. You also have to keep in mind that just because you have listings in a search engine you are not always going to make sales. Listings in search engines just means that when someone searches they will see your site. Think of driving down a major street and seeing billboards, signs, goofy people dressed up like bears, balloons, and signs that state 50% off every item in the store. All of them are marketing some of them are more successful than others and you have to remember that you will not always a winner.

These are a few suggestions that you can do to your site to make it user and search engine friendly. Like I said above “Keep in mind no single one of these is a silver bullet, however all of them used and compiled into one site will make for a better site.” Send me an email if you have questions.

I hope you find this useful in getting better listings in Google. It has helped me get listed in about 20 different engines and various directorie.

Yes, good post. Hyphenated keywords in the domain name is a great idea and has worked for me also.
