Went to GoDaddy's website and found this notice posted at the top:

NOTICE... November 2004 ICANN Transfer Policy Email
From November 8-10, we are sending an email to all domain customers informing you of a new domain transfer policy, enforced by ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). This policy dictates that we must honor any transfer requests, even if you do not personally confirm them. To prevent unauthorized transfers, lock your domains. This service is free and takes only a minute.

Is this true? Can anyone transfer a domain from your account without your confirmation? A fee for "locking" and "unlocking" domains could come in the near future! ICANN Must be losing their minds. :veryangry

Thanks,
DD

Yes, but perhaps easier said than done as a big problem is the GD/WW lock fails with an error message if doing bulk locking. Been that way for a long time and the bug has never been fixed or addressed.

Slowly getting more and more negative about them with continuous issues (including their very annoying 60 day locks) for a long time. Problem is there is likely no one any better as far as overall benefits and costs go.

Ongoing error message never fixed after a few months from what I recall: "We apologize for this inconvenience, but an error has been detected. The details of the error have been recorded. We will investigate the matter and take appropriate action."

This is Scary..

Just checked some of the biggest local websites and 80% did not have lock enabled... Also imagine when its like 3-4 days holiday or u know the guy is out for 5-6 days u can just request a domain transfer and get the domain.

What Do one do to avoid this other than the LOCK..

Right Jeff..
If u dont deny that u have authorized the transfer request in 5 days. U loose the domain as simple as that. If its not locked..

Do the first is lock all your domains now..

One possible reason is that ICANN has received numerous complaints of failed
outbound transfers even though full compliance was observed by the endusers.
They're simply following an old business and media adage: give what the public
wants.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't...

This has been set in place for months now:
http://www.icann.org/announcements/advisory-12jul04.htm

But expect lots of stories in the news about hijacked domains.
.COM .NET and .CC are the biggest affected, all others have EPP keys - you can thank Verisign/Netsol for not getting EPP implimented.

By the way, lock and unlock on GoDaddy only takes a few minutes for me, not hours?

Horrifying! How come it is just GoDaddy that is doing this if it is an ICANN restriction? Or is it all of them?

And this still doesn't address the problem of registrars like Pacnames (Totalnic) who hijack your names by putting them in Registrar-Lock and refusing to unlock them for any purpose including transfers!
