The best thing I can suggest is to use http://dir.yahoo.com and enter the name you are interested in. As for what it "used to be", use the wayback machine, for traffic use Alexa, and check popularity at http://www.submitexpress.com/linkpop/

Nah, 10 pages aren't needed. Just a few words next to each domain name, ie. "former console games site" or "former bridal forum."

I don't have time to do this research.
