This is not the first and certainly not the last time Google make their points clear about link manipulation. In the near future, we can be sure that there would be no shortage of such update coming from Google. But from my point of view, the majority of the masses are not even aware of what is backlinks and why would they need it. So no matter what Google do, they have to comply with the the general behavior of the masses and take that into account.
